No surprise to me. I am retired military and still have a few contacts that haven't retired or died.
There is an adage among "News People". If it bleeds, it leads. If one of our guys were blown to pieces and a piece of him had hit this child and killed her, we would have heard about it and George Bush would have been to blame.
Sorry, this sort of stuff infuriates me. I KNOW what went on in Vietnam and the news never depicted the situation accurately. The same is true now. Unless you are a liberal, there is nothing good in the news.

The thing to notice is the two different stories you hear about Iraq.
On one hand you have the reporters who are going out with the troops and reporting on things they have seen first-hand. These people tend to support our mission and feel that we will eventually succeed.
On the other hand you have the journalists who have never left New York or Washington DC. The do not support our mission and claim that we are losing.
Why is it that people only listen to the journalists who have never been there themselves?
