Is Science diet the best food for my Chihuahua who had Addison's disease? I have heard that Innova is a good food, and we are trying to get her weight down (she is on prednisone which makes her hungry). She will not eat the Science Diet lite food and I have found the Diet Innova but is it better? Is there something else better than Science Diet? Pedigree? And if we do switch should we just switch her all of a sudden or do it gradual? How do you swicth gradual?

RUN, don't walk, to either of these webpages:
www.Addisondogs.com or www.K9addisons.com

These are the homepages for the two Addison's dogs support lists. which are full of such chat & info....

I'll spill the beans here though: once a dog is stable on addison's medication, they can eat any diet you would give a normal dog (though most of us shy from things like Bananas that are hugely high in K). HOWEVER if she's trying to eat the entire house her pred dose may be a tad overgenerous.

I agree with you in NOT feeding your puppy Science Diet - it's garbage! Vets push it because they're paid to, but it's a terrible food. Not all brands agree with all dogs. Wellness, even though a good brand, just doesn't agree with your dog. Years ago, I tried switching my dogs to Wellness and not one of them tolerated it for whatever reason. I changed to Innova and they did great on that one. Try a different brand - stick with a really good brand of food though, and that should make a difference. Perhaps your puppy has an allergy to something in the food, but feeding him Scient Diet is not the answer.

I feed my dog and foster dogs Nature's Variety..its great food and comes in a variety of flavors..and usually if you switch food you change it gradually. i started my first foster on this food because he was very sensitive to foods and when he started this he totally changed and was 100 times better. his boul movements were less and he never threw up or anything. I had to take him off food for 24 hours and then gave it to him, because he was reacting so badly to his previous food.

talk to your vet about all that. he or she is the only one who knows your dog's medical history, so your vet could tell you the best food for your dog, and also how to switch the foods (which should be done gradually).
