I realize you don't want to go to a Doc, but you must. Do not risk further damage or deficit to your foot! You need them! Also, infection is a possibility. "Nail" it (sorry) now while you can.

I am an esthetician, and have dealt with people with ingrowns... you will need to see either a podiatrist or doctor. Because your nails don't stop growing, it will keep growing into your skin if you don't get it removed.
When I had an ingrown, it wasn't that bad, I just dealt with the pain, and dug it out and trimmed it off with a pair of nail nippers... and then whenever i cut my toenails i trim it up again... it hurts super bad to dig it out on your own, but I guess that's your only option if you won;t go to a dr...
also, make sure anything you touch it with is sterilized (boil in water, soak in bleach, boil in water)... and then dump hydrogen peroxide on it...
But I really do suggest you see a doctor or podiatrist to get it taken care of for good...

Home remedies? I have had to deal with them alot. Trust me when I say that going to the Doctor is the least painful way to deal with it. I had it done once in the mid 80's, once in the mid 90's and again a year ago. Beats the heck out of cutting them out yourself (painful), getting an infection (way painful) and having to do it again as soon as it grows out (painful all over again).
Had one of my junior Marines try to "fix" one at home and ended up with:
1. surgery
2. antibiotics for a LONG time
3. Megga amounts of pain until he got to the Doctor (and almost had to be carried in)
The good thing about going to a podiatrist is that they will numb the area, do a good clean job that will heal quickly, and put a small amount of chemical on the area to keep the toenail from becoming ingrown again.
Good luck and please don't try to fix this on your own.

You can buy products to soften the nail but ultimately you need minor surgery to relieve the pain and prevent infection. You do not need to have the whole nail removed, just the ingrowing part, and they will anesthetize the area so you don't feel it. If it is really painful try soaking your foot in warm water with salt in, this should soften the nail temporarily and hopefully relieve the pain.

I'm sorry that you are in so much pain. My son had a roommate in college with this same problem. I know it was very painful and he tried everything. But, he couldn't stand it and finally went to the Dr. They did minor surgery and fixed him up fine. Please go to see the Doc & get it taken care of the right way. You'll be glad you did. Good Luck!

Sea salt soaks.
Mix about ¼ teaspoon salt per 8oz of water and soak your toe in it for 5 to 10 minutes, once or twice a day.

boil it out with peroxide, then take a piece of cotton rolled up with antibiotic ointment on it and place it under the nail, inbetween the skin and the nail. It will hurt, but it willl help get hte infection out and after you get it placed it will relieve the pressure.
