Going to the vet can be costly but when owning a pet, that is something that must be accounted for.

It sounds like conjunctivitis in which you need antibiotic drops. Go to the vet

When there is a problem with the eyes, you should ALWAYS go see a vet. You don't want to put any kind of over the counter drops in his eyes, because it is possible that it could make them worse. I know the vet can get costly, but when it comes to eyes, it is worth it.

I work at a vet clinic, and yesterday a lady came in with her cat. The cat has had crusty eyes for about 3 weeks, and it got to the point where the cat couldn't open them. She had tried to self medicate them at home, but it didn't help. When we took a look at the eyes, they were HORRIBLE! They were ulcered, crusty, Red, buldging. To the point that she could no longer see. This poor cats eyes had to be removed. The owner couldn't affored the surgery, so she wanted to euthanize the cat. The Vet said NO Way! She adopted the cat, and removed her eyes. When she touched the eyes, they Popped, and I'm not kidding. That is how bad they were. The cat now has NO eyes, so it totally blind. But that is better than being euthanized.

I told you this because I don't want this to happen to your dog. It really is best to get your dog to the vet, and don't wait too long, because they could get worse. And the longer you wait, the more expensive it could be. Good Luck, I hope it isn't too costly for you.

Barring infection, the crusty stuff is most likely only a discolored tear discharge that can be cleaned using a clean wash cloth and warm water. Gently pat at the crust until it starts to soften and then begin picking it away carefully. The cloudy look is most likely caused by the irritation of the crusty deposit getting into the eyes. If it doesn't start to fade away within an hour or so then you may be looking at an abraded or ulcerated cornea. That means that you have no choice you must take him to the vet for the proper medication to prevent or get rid of possible infection.
He doesn't want to open his eyes because the irritation has made him light sensitive and he is in considerable discomfort.

I work at a vet and I would suggest that you DO NOT use anything over the counter because you have no idea what is wrong with your dog's eye- it may have an ulcer, cataracts, or an infection-there really isn't any way to get around to going to the vet this time-unless you don't care if your dog goes blind. Most of the clients that bring their dog's into our office that have eye issues need prescription meds. Good Luck!

If his eye is a little cloudy, he could be going blind in that eye. What I do for my dogs when they have an eye infection, I get some regular eye drops or contact solution and just put them in their eyes once to twice a day. If that doesn't help you really should try the vet.

Bring him to the vet. If its just an eye infection it shouldnt be that bad $ wise, although it may be something more serious and you could be making it worse by waiting.Good luck!
