Probably because they have been in School all day and tired of doing classwork. When my Kids got home from School their first chore was to eat a snack, do your homework and then clean your room and then you may go to play, watch TV ect. I was very strict about this, and I would always check to make sure their homework was done.

Kate hit the nail on the head with this one!! If I had to come home from work everyday, and answer busy phones, file, type, deal with customers again, etc I would go nuts!!
When I get home, I like to relax for awhile. I usually don't answer my phone, b/c I get sick of talking to people. I do it at work ALL DAY LONG!! So, kids are the same....they have been expected to sit at their desk....and work, work, and work. I have a 7 year old, it's extremely hard to get him to do homework....but we manage to work through it. He has ADHD as well, so getting him to focus after school can be tough. He knows the rules though, no TV, no video games, etc until the homework gets done.
Good Luck!!

Well, I'd say it's because they have to learn stuff that they have NO interest in, just because some professional deemed it necessary for the common good. In actuality, allowing kids to study their own interests will lead them to doing a much greater amount of work, and it naturally spreads into other disciplines as needed.
I also want to second (or third) the notion that after spending seven hours at school, who the heck wants to do more work? It IS a lot of work at school, I would get tired just being there to volunteer, it's not easy for the kids either.

Ok, I'm a kid and i gotta tell ya sometimes i would rather do anything then homework. For your kid it may be to hard, he may not be challenged enough or he might just be lazy. Most kids are just lazy. It's gonna take some encouragement to get that homework done.

Because how would you feel if after going to work you had to come home to more work. Many kids just want to hang out when they get home just like any normal adult would want to. Plus, have you seen how much work they give for homework nowadays??? I have 76 pages to read for History and I have to tell how I agree or disagree with the author and that's just one subject.
P.S. I do, do my homework by the way.

Believe it or not, many kids think they're too good for homework, they think that they are too pretty to do something so normal. The shallow bastards.
