I am a first year teacher and the school that I work at has a very small and poor library. This is severly affecting the students achievement in Reading. I am trying to find ways to get good books that students will actually enjoy so we can increase their want to read independently. Any advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!

Have you sent home a note to the parents asking for books that are in good condition that their children don't use any more? You could ask the principal to give it out to the entire school and/or give it out at Church. People hate to throw books away but if their children aren't using them anymore, they hate to store them, too.

I grew my classroom library with Scholastic and Troll books. They are really great books and very cheap! Even if the class didn't want to order books themselves, I would place an order for the room. Once the box arrived, I made a big deal of talking about each book to the class. Once for the "Devils Arithmetic," I told them that I read it during commercials and it was so good, I turned off the TV and finished it. I had a waiting list for the book and, eventually, someone took it!

You can order online a box of library pockets and cards and you could do your classroom library just like you would if they went to the library in the school.

First off, does your school participate in Scholastic Book Fairs? If not check into that. Per sales, I think< you get books donated to you. Another thing my children's school does is put up a classroom wish list. Each teacher from each grade makes a list of 5-10 books. Then parents can purchase books for the classrooms. You could also have a wish list for the library. Talk to the principal and the PTA or PTO about sending notes home to parents letting them know the school needs books. Tell them new or gently used books would be much appreciated. Sometimes local stores will allow you to have bake sales or other things of the sort. Do a "Book Drive" instead. Even having a bake sale to earn money for the library would work.

basically communicate to the librarian. tell him/her which that's advisable to donate a e book, enable them look over it and then you have to be sturdy. If no longer, you would possibly want to donate it to places like GoodWill or Savers. i wish to bypass thrifting at those places, and a number of them have a exceedingly respectable number of books.

Contact several book publishers like Baen Publishing and explain your dilemma. There is a good chance that they will donate to your school.
