get a liquid cleaner and drip it into the ear as you hold the puppy between your knees gently. then massauge at the base of the ear for 20 seconds. next use a cotton ball to remove exess moisture and debree from the ear... reapeat once a day till clean then weekly if the smell still persists it could be an infection and you should get the pup into a vet.

Purchase a bottle of epiotic ear cleaner from your vet. It's a little more expensive but it lasts forever.
All you do is put a few drops in the ear, then put the ear flap back down and massage the ear. Then hold his head while you do the same thing with the other ear.
Then, let go and let him shake! He will shake some of the stuff out, and you can do it every day until the ears are perfect, then go to once a week, or once a month, depending on how fast his ears get dirty again.
You can use q-tips to gently clean the grime from the outer most area and ear flap, just don't go into the ear canal at all.

Congrats on your new puppy! They are all fidgety but I am sure you will be able to do this easily with a little practice!

If they stink, he probably has an infection. Take him to the vets for a look-see. If it is an infection the vet will give you the proper medication. While there ask for their recommend ear cleaner. There is a product by Vet Solution for cleaning dogs ears. It has a pleasant smell and does a great job of getting the goop out of the ear canal. Far better than washcloths and baby oil.
Flop eared dogs have a tendency toward ear infections so you'll have to keep your nose tuned to what his ears are doing.
As for getting more cooperation from your dog while you're doing the deed. Try starting out with an ear massage. Dachsy's love to have their ears rubbed. When he becomes more relaxed, start by caressing the ear with the solution and a cotton ball. Slowly work toward the more sensitive areas. He might be acting out because the ears are sore but once the irritation is gone he should begin to actually like the cleaning.

We have a dachshund too, and he often gets ear infections so we've had to clean his ears a lot. There are drops you can purchase which u don't need to clean out, so just a few drops in the ears can work. However, if u do want to clean his ears, our vet advises just a little bit of the q tip--no baby oil necessary b/c you are trying to remove build up--around the outer ear--to get too deep risks puncture. Before u start, have some snacks near by to reward him for being good, and also massage/stroke his ears b/c that is often calming. Then, a little cleaning with the q tip...and after just a bit of cleaning, let puppy have a moment to shake his head before you go back in.

First of all you need to be calm and patient - you're dealing with a puppy. Pick a time when he's tired out from a long walk or lots of playing. With him lying on his side, clean his ears with a cotton ball moistened with warm water.

A dog's ears should never stink - if they do, or are red or sore looking, he needs to get to the vet to find the cause and treat it. If they're just full of wax build-up, cleaning regularly will take care of it.

You can use oil, the down side is the residue of oil left in the ear attracts dirt, that's why my vet recommended using only water.

I'm a Vet Tech- go to your vet and ask for ear cleaner. You may want to get someone to hold him still while you clean his ears. Don't use cutips, just get the ear cleaner, squirt some down his ear canal, massage his ear with the cleaner still in the canal, then stand back and let him shake it out-repeat with other ear-take paper towels and wipe both ears out. The ear cleaner that you get from the vet has a drying agent in it to help dry up any wax or build up- and when your dog shakes out the ear cleaner, it brings out all the gunk from way down in the ear canal that you may not be able to get to. Hope I have helped! Good Luck!! :)

well i have 5 dachshunds i find the best way is to get a baby wipe and use your finger and get in all the crevices. the more you do this the less he will fidgette. he may be moving so much because they are tender. he may have ear mites or a yeast infection so you may want to get that checked. also i have a dachshund group on yahoo groups called Kays Dachshund Place. you can post a question on there too if you need.

hi have a Pomeranian that used to have ear mites as a puppy so i know how hard it is to clean a toy dogs ears.... they can't sit still and dont like it no matter how sweet you are to them about it, even treats didnt work.... so what i did is just be patient until he calmed down in between each ear.... i would flush his ears out with a ear cleaning solution i got from my vet.... witch i know that you can also get at any pet store... hope this helps you :)

one thing you shouldn t use any babyoil on dogs cause willl make them have ears infection and either dont use any wash cloth that is use on something ? you can use a clean tissue and wet it little bit and have youre dog to lay down on youre lap and just grab one of his ear start clean it gently around the ears inside but dont do it so hard . might make youre dog feel uncomftable .

Unfortunetly if they stink, mabey their infected, I'd see a vet. If they are just dirty I'd use an alcohol or witch hazel on a cotton ball, and get someone to hold the squirmer for you.
