and has never really been properly trained? i have a year old pomeranian who was 7 months old when we got her... right after i got her, i got very sick and was unable to properly house break her... so, she has been doing her business, mostly inside unfortunately for almost 5 months... i am finally well enough to begin proper training, but am wondering if it will work? i know i will have to have a lot of patience and it will be hard, but i am hoping it won't be a complete waste of time... please, no rude or mean answers.. i know having a dog do business inside is gross, and unhealthy for both animal and owner, but thats not what i am asking...

oh, i would never give her up because i didn't have the ability to train her... that would be irresponsable on my part and she doesn't deserve that... nice thing is, she is so small (3.8lb) so everything that comes out is tiny too... :)

You absolutely can still house train her - it might take a little longer because you're re-training, but it can definitely be done.

If you crate train her as some people are suggesting, you're never going to have a housetrained dog. If you want her housetrained, you need to keep her in the room with you while you're training so you can watch her. The idea is to catch her before she has an accident in the house and teach using positive reinforcement, not corrections.

If she looks restless (circling, nose to the ground), hasn't been out for quite a while, woke up from a long nap, take her out. You need to go out with her, say "go pee" and the very second she does, give her lots and lots of praise and come right back in. That way she learns to differentiate between playtime and pee time outside.

With lots of praise for correct behaviour rather than corrections, dogs learn very quickly.

Before you start, you need to use a really good cleaner (nothing with ammonia) to get every trace of the smell out where she's gone before or she'll just keep going back there.

While you're re-training and until she's reliable, you really do need to crate her when you're not home. At night, it's your call - best to either crate her or confine her to your room.

I adopted a 1 year old dog from the Humane Society and she was not potty trained when we got her. It took only a few days to potty train her, and after 2 weeks there were NO accidents in the house. You just have to be very consistant with your training. Good Luck, it is possible.

You are definitely able to still train her, but it may take a bit more work because she has been in the habit of doing her business around the house, so just have patience and it will all pay off. I hope you two work out great!

Yes! Potty training works on simple classical training techniques. The idea being that good behaviors are rewarded. Unforutnately, because your dog has already been in your home and "going" inside the home, she's learned this pattern of behavior and it will be harder for u to re-train her. It is NOT a waste of time, but will involve lots of patience, rewarding, and accidents along the way.

yes you can train her at one year of age. It will take a little longer to train her. if you have the time and patience and lots of love to give her. When training her , make it seem like playing & not work. Reward her when she obeys your command while training. Speak to her with the tone of voice that you are the boss.. Good luck

Try crate training her. It is very effective and it works well for older dogs. The link below explains how.

Try crate training her. You can find the details on how to crate train here:

and definately here:

And I don't think she's too old to learn. I think she'd better learn, because it's going to be extremely hard to find her a new home if you have to give her up because she isn't housebroken.

Yeah it is still possible. It is hard though. If you can't seem to get it to happen then you can always go to a trainer and they can do it.
