What if a man holds the airbag down in the steering wheel in a stationary vehicle while someone deploys the air bag? Will the man be able to resist it, or will it break arms, tear tendons, etc?

if you can hold on to a 200mph pillow exploding in your face than you sir, are a stronger man than i am. i would expect at least a few pulled muscles, and maybe some fractures. painful to say the least. i would pass on this stunt if i were you.

Are you hoping to be on Jackass? Or the Darwin Awards?

No, airbags are not your sweet mother holding you back when she hits the brakes hard. Airbags are a pillow exploding in your face at 200mph, driven by the equivalent of a shotgun blast. They will DEFINITELY injure you even if you're sitting properly. They will certainly break arms, dislocate shoulders etc if you are not positioned right. I would expect long-term or permanent disability from the stunt you propose.

The concept is that you'll be injured less than if the airbag didn't deploy, especially if you are an idiot and didn't have your seatbelt on. Americans have a particular fondness for not wearing their seatbelt, so airbags in American cars pack a lot more punch than airbags in European cars.

In my amateur opinion you are better off with a racing-quality seat belt. NASCAR doesn't use airbags.

The airbag deployment is a controlled explosion, airbag has to be deployed in a fraction of a second to do any good. The speed of the deployment can be as high as 340 mph. I would say that if anybody was dumb enough to do what you said, they would break their arms and rip their tendons.

Brother in law's Dad had one go off and he had his arm across the steering wheel. Broke his arm. It's like standing in front of a shot gun. So, just in case your don't have a big red S across your chest, and you can't leap tall buildings in a single bound. Yeah it will hurt you if you aren't strapped in.

I would not advise it. Have seen reports of many broken arms due to airbag deployment -- damn things are a menace.
