depends on the tribe and region of the tribe, in Africa for example some use it as war paint. In other cultures means position in society, coming of age rite(along sometimes with flagelation or self inflicting wounds), others use it only as decoration, insect repeling technique, religious simbolism as in weddings ect.Camouflage or hunting activities,specially in cannibal tribes. hope this answers your q.
