...Taking pride in one's work and striving to do a job well done is admirable.
...The pride here that is undesirable is like this: look at the middle letter, the "I". Pride is entirely self-focused and self-motivated - "all for me", thinking of one's self more highly than he ought, with only self in mind.
...A Christian's focus should be to love God and others first, and put self last.

I don't think pride is a sin unless you misuse it. I believe you can have pride in yourself for being able to to remain a good person dispite of what society throws at you. You can have pride in God and all that He is. You can proud of your children and all their accomplishments. You can be proud of your parents for being good parents, but If all you're proud of is how good you look , or that you have more money than the average joe, or that you're better than anybody period. All that leads to Gloting, Vanity, and belittleing people and all that leads to sin.

The opposite of humility is pride. (Proverbs 6:16-19) Pride led to Satan’s downfall. (1Â Timothy 3:6) It easily takes root in human hearts, and once there, it is hard to remove. People are prideful because of their country, their race, their possessions, their education, their secular achievements, their social standing, their looks, their sporting abilities, and many other things. Yet, none of those things are important to Jehovah. (1Â Corinthians 4:7) And if they cause us to be proud, they damage our relationship with him. “Jehovah is high, and yet the humble one he sees; but the lofty one he knows only from a distance.”—Psalm 138:6; Proverbs 8:13.

We're not talking about the kind of pride one feels for a child or even for one's self after accomplishing something good. We're talking about the kind of pride that embodies the feelings of "look at me, I'm so great, don't you all wish you could be like me? Hey, you're supposed to be looking up to me. Look, dammit!" It's almost like a form of hubris, so to speak.

The sin of pride is a preoccupation with self. It is thus very fitting that the middle letter in the word is "i." Pride is all about "me, myself, and I." So even as the word "pride" is centered upon an "i," the sin itself is also centered upon "I."

Christianity consider anything remotely entertaining, pleasurable, or self satifsying a sin.
Pride therefore, the expression of being pleased with aspects of ones self, must be a sin.
