Bi polar basically means two different ends of the same spectrum. The manic highs and lows that one gets and how fast it happens depends on how fast their mood cycles. Some bipolar people can cycle fast having extreme highs and lows with minutes of each other. While others cycle at a slower speed say like days apart.

A cycle is the period of time an individual takes to go through one episode of mania and one of depression (or hypomania and depression). As for how often these cycles occur, there is, unfortunately, no definitive answer. The frequency and duration of cycles are as varied as the individuals who have them.

So let's say a guy named John is bipolar. His mood will cycle differetly than other peoples. Let's say his moods change from high to low a couple times a week. Then his doctor puts him on or takes him off a new medication. This can trigger him to cycle more like several times a day or less like a couple times a month or even every few months. Then lets say John finds out his wife is cheating. Emotional duress can cause a person to cycle more which can cause mania. Mania is when their mood is so high they go on shopping sprees spending money they don't have, making irrational judgments and decisions, or poor impulse control which could cause suicide. And remember, the higher you go the farther you crash. What comes up must come down. That's why it is an illness that is treated with medication and therapy and the person who is bipolar becomes a professional at the illness.

Hello Barbara. Bipolar disorder is caused by an imbalance in brain neurotrasmiters. For this reason the person´s mood changes from high to down mood. The time between one mood and the other changes from person to person. The spiritual explanation is that the person has a spirit attached. So when the spirit rules the person is in the down mood feeling depressed and when the person rules she/he is in the up mood. Argentox2@yahoo.com

It's called cycling. Some people cycle every 6 months or every other day. It just depends on how long you've had the disease, if you are taking meds (yes you can still cycle if your doseage is not correct), if you are not taking meds or if you think you are cured and go off meds altogether (you are never cured-the meds only mask the symptoms.)
