What a GREAT question! :)
NO! I don't think it's good! And it's sick how many people blindly follow and trust a doctor without doing their own research. Come on people...it's called a medical 'PRACTICE' for a reason! They are practicing on us.
Seven years ago I was diagnosed with mild depression and the last drug I was on made me have horrific nightmares and the side effects were worse than the depression - told the doc I wanted to look at an herbal alternative- he said no. :) That's when I 'fired' him. I ended up having vitamin deficiencies...doc said I would be on antidepressants for LIFE! A few supplements and I was cured.
More recently, I have had some other health problems....I had two doctors tell me I needed antidepressants, I said no, they called it in to the pharmacy anyway, and didn't pick them up WHY? Because most docs GUESS on what's wong with you rarely doing any tests, ask you the 'depression questions' to make it a serious diagnosis.
What was my health issue??? A severe hormone imbalance that 13 doctors missed, blew off, and belittled over 2 years. I am fine now...without their rediculous antidepressants that I never needed.
Great question...thanks for letting me vent. :)

In some extreme cases anti-depressants are very much needed. It saved a lot of people's lives by preventing suicide. I do think that just handing over a bottle of pills to someone who is depressed or anxiety ridden & just leaving it at that, is horrible and negligent. There is always a reason why someone is depressed and they need to talk about it, so I think meds should only be used temporarily as the patient is receiving counseling/therapy.
Before patients "trick or treat" on a doctor's door for happy pill candy, doctors should always recommend counseling before any meds are given. Meds just cover up the problem(sometimes they don't even work and have horrible side effects) but talking to a therapist can really get to the root of the problem. You'll learn some wonderful things about yourself that you can apply to the rest of your life. Also when you know of anyone suffering from anxiety and depression, you'll have great advice to share that you acquired in therapy.

I don't feel we live in a culture that gives anti depressants out to cure all ills? I do believe anti depressants are abused, but those instances are by people that self-medicate. A doctor would not give you a prescription for anti depressants unless he felt you needed it.

Mr Charles. Yes, in this culture antidepressants are over used. However it is important to understand mental illnesses.
Most mental illnesses are caused by an imbalance in brain neurotrasmiters. For us who suffer mental illnesses (in my case depression and anxiety) medicines have been a miracle to improve the quality of our lives. Years ago, people who suffered from mental illnesses were considered crazy and locked in a hospital. Nowadays people with Bipolar disorder, Schizophrenia, Anxiety, Depression, OCD, Epilepsy can lead a pretty normal life, go to work etc. Medicines do not cure the illnesses, as I said they treat them and improve the quality of our lives. I think what is important is to go to therapy while taking pills, to find the root of the problem. I do not know if you suffer from a mental illnesses, but they are really horrible experiences for the people who suffer them. Argentox2@yahoo.com

I don't feel that a country that issues anti depressants out to cure all ills is actual fact. I feel you may feel that way because of the media. Actually medication is issued out along with recommendations to a therapist. After that, as an adult it is up to us to continue our medication and therapy. By the way meds don't cure anything they just take the edge off all the trauma you've been through.

I think it is good to live in a culture where we have access to doctors who have the ability to help us. Taking medication is a choice. Some of us have tried other things to avoid medication and medication is the only thing left to help us over a rough time.
Reputable doctors do not give antidepressant to cure all ills.

What ills are we giving anti-depressants to that doesn't need them? As I see it, most people do use this as an excuse for depression, but they really just need to explore, enjoy, and help with their own society.

Granted; people in the U.S, are the most medicated group in the world, but that doesn't necessarily mean that some people don't need them. Most anti-depressants are for chemical imbalances that cause depression. They don't get you high!

No,as we are now seeing it makes people and especially children dependent on "quick fixes". They are also less likely/unable to make decisions on their own.
