The purpose of life is to develop moral virtues and to put them to the service of mankind. Here is why.
A baby in the womb of his mother may ask. What am I doing in this dark and confined environment, in this liquid world in which I am growing?
I don't even know why I am developing eyes, ears, legs and arms if I am not able to use them.
The answer is that they will be useful in the world in which he will be born, the physical world in which we live now.
What happens if he decided and could "not develop" his arms and legs when he was growing in the womb? He would be at a disadvantage here, of course.
The purpose of physical existence is to develop moral virtues, and to put them to the service of others, to the service of mankind. This done at the individual level will lead to the progress, well being peace and security of the whole human race.
For us it will be like developing the organs that will allow us to progress in the future worlds, which are spiritual and not material.
Here are some practical suggestions for acquiring those virtues.
"Be generous in prosperity, and thankful in adversity. Be worthy of the trust of thy neighbor, and look upon him with a bright and friendly face. Be a treasure to the poor, an admonisher to the rich, an answerer of the cry of the needy, a preserver of the sanctity of thy pledge. Be fair in thy judgment, and guarded in thy speech. Be unjust to no man, and show all meekness to all men. Be as a lamp unto them that walk in darkness, a joy to the sorrowful, a sea for the thirsty, a haven for the distressed, an upholder and defender of the victim of oppression. Let integrity and uprightness distinguish all thine acts. Be a home for the stranger, a balm to the suffering, a tower of strength for the fugitive. Be eyes to the blind, and a guiding light unto the feet of the erring. Be an ornament to the countenance of truth, a crown to the brow of fidelity, a pillar of the temple of righteousness, a breath of life to the body of mankind, an ensign of the hosts of justice, a luminary above the horizon of virtue, a dew to the soil of the human heart, an ark on the ocean of knowledge, a sun in the heaven of bounty, a gem on the diadem of wisdom, a shining light in the firmament of thy generation, a fruit upon the tree of humility."

The question and answer is relevant to perception, and the belief system that a person holds as truth. It's an opportunity to live in this body of duality. We learn through misery/suffering or insight. I believe we're here to grow and evolve, to make a choice to get busy dying or get busy living. I guess it's in the middle of love and fear.
It's an infinite question, if anyone knew they wouldn't be in this school called earth. Everyone is right I suppose, what we choose to be the purpose of our life will be evident in the physical manifestation of the lives we have created. We are the question, we are the answer...something like that.

My grandfather is 91 years old, and I have to say he had the best answer to this question. We were all sitting around talking, and the whole "purpose of life" conversation came about. Finally, after hearing enough of the regular "happiness", "for god(s)", etc, he said, and I quote, " I am tired of people debating this question. it's simple, the purpose of life is living, plain and simple. Why people feel the need to overcomplicate simple things is something I will never understand".
Of course, this is coming from a man who believes at his age he shouldn't sleep more than a couple hours at a time. He claims he is afraid that if he sleeps too long, he may not wake up.
You have to love old people.

When God made us, he implanted within us a burning desire for his will. Knowing his will and following it will give meaning to our life. This implies that it is our responsibility to give meaning to our life. Our task then is to find out his will for us.
God's plan for our lives is etched in our desires. To discover God's plan we need to have a personal relationship with him. But because he gave us free will, he will not tell us to be a doctor, an engineer or priest. That's up to us. That means we have to pray and reflect on it a bit. Maybe even ask other people to help us discern it. No big deal, really.
All of us have received gifts from God. Our primary gift or best gift is an indication of God's plan for us. We will find in it the handwriting of God. It will point to our life project, our assigned purpose, our God ordained mission. It will also point to our happiness.
Peace and every blessing!

The purpose of life is to receive a body, learn for ourselves the difference between good and evil. Then to choose good of our own free will. So we can have joy and peace in this life and the life to come. So we can live with our Heavenly Father and become like Him. So we can have eternal families of our own.

Logic is the closest thing possible that can be a viable answer to that question. That is why whenever you ask, "what is the meaning of life" the answer is usually "42."
Not much of a meaning, but it's a number, and numbers are logical, so they are at least pointing the gun in the right direction.

Thank you vinslave! I was going to answer... but you beat me to it. Just gain as much knowledge and experience as many things as possible before you die. That is all there is. All that separates us from animals is our ability to reason. Our ability to actually understand that we have gained knowledge or had an experience. So, use that reason. Experience what you can, because when you die, there is nothing.
