It can be very helpful...
For one, all the girls there are single and actively looking - that alone helps your odds and prevents embarrassment.
Also you can actively avoid turn-offs. If you don't like smokers or women with kids, you can see on their profiles and not contact them. If you want a particular religion or political worldview you can typically narrow your search down based on that. It really lets you screen potential women in a way you can't do in bars or clubs.
Keep in mind though that they can just as easily screen guys through their profiles. So the door swings both ways.

Some of the people that post on there are fake, just looking to get some free advertising for who knows what. But, most of them are ok. Just be careful and talk to the person online a little bit before giving a phone number or meeting. Good Luck.

AT first people i knew were doing the Internet dating it didn't seem to be working out too bad for them i was in the middle of a divorce and well to tell you the truth kinda sour on the whole dating and men thing {this is for you to hot sing...} and i reluctantly put a profile on myself to tell you the truth i am sexy confident,fun and in love with life so i had no problem meeting men on my own trust me, but i actually liked knowing about people and talking first before anything else and i also have a happy ending i moved to Alaska with the most incredible man and i really didn't think one existed but it can work out and if your honest and sincere then odds are in your favor.......

You tried to squeeze your whole post into your subject line, but going on what you were able to type, I think those things can be useful tools in meeting people we may potentially want to date.
People simply have to try to use good judgement, and proceed with caution...just as when meeting someone offline and arranging to date.

they are great for chatting and getting to know people from all over the world and know that they are looking for more or lease the same thing. depending on what your wants and needs are.
