I can't speak for all Atheists, but I am proud to be one because I feel that I have freed myself from the brainwashing I was put through as a child. I feel free to think clearly, and for myself. The idea that there is some all powerful being out there telling me how to live my life is not a pleasent one. As for why we exist, it still isn't known. I feel the God and religion are just an excuse to try and explain something that is still beyond our reach. I also do not fear being dead, I wasn't alive for the last 14-15 billion years. Didn't bother me much then.
In short, being free of the restraints of "god" and religion me and many other to continue to look for the true answers. If God ends up being the true answer, if we find him hiding in the corner of the universe playing cards with some friends and he gives us evidence beyond reasonable doubt that he is the creator. I will believe in him then.
Until that time, I will continue to ask questions and live life knowing that I am a free mind.

Why does there have to be a "why?" Is your life so devoid of things to learn, goals to achieve, family to care for, and a world to enjoy that you *must* have some mythological god-figure to dictate a reason for you to live? How sad.
We're proud to be atheists because we've managed, despite intense cultural pressure NOT to do so, to throw off the irrationality and superstition that shackle the masses, keep them ignorant, and get them to waste time, energy, and money in worship of made-up gods and false promises of "paradise" after death.
Personally, I'm living and working to make this short life, which is all we have, the absolute best I can make it...and to leave when I go children and grandchildren that are happy, healthy, and rational to carry on the human species. I guess you're living only for a made-up "reward in heaven?" Again -- how sad.
Peace.

Some people believe that life is, biologically speaking, a fluke of nature. Those people also tend to believe that this life is all we have. Not everyone finds the comfort in a belief of God or a higher Power that so many do.
If they are proud of their beliefs more power to them. Part of that pride could be their opinion that those who believe in God are deluding themselves. So by denying that, they are going against the grain, which for some people is something to be proud of.
A belief or lack there of should never be something to be ashamed of. Accept those around you without trying to change them.

Don't worry about what they believe in, worry about what you believe in. Rather than ask why are atheists proud to be atheists, you should instead ask why is anyone proud of what they are? If there is one thing we can all be proud of it is being a part of the cycle of life.

we live and work etc. to have fun and enjoy the life we have, god isn't required to find meaning in life, and I'm proud that i figured out the truth, that your god does not exist and that i am better than those who are weak and need to cling to a belief because they are afraid there is no afterlife, or cant think for themselves.

That's the same as asking Why Christians are proud to be Christians?
I don't think that Christians understand that not everyone thinks the same way they do. Not believing in god doesn't disappoint or upset me in any way.

"I love him who lives for knowledge and works and invents so that one day the earth may belong to the Overman. For thus he wills his own downgoing.
I love him who does not want too many virtues. One virtue is more virtue than two for it is more of a knot for fate to cling to. For he shall perish of his virtue.
I love him whose soul is deep, even in its ability to be wounded and whom even a little thing can destroy. For he is happy to go over the bridge.
Behold! I am a prophet and a heavy drop of rain from the dark cloud that hangs over mankind. But the Overman - he is the lightning."
Christians aren't the only ones who have words they turn to for meaning - but I don't hold the above as literally true.

I'm not neither proud nor disappointed or ashamed. I just am. And that's enough. I don't need a crutch. If you do, I don't think less of you for it. Whatever gets you through the night man.

I'm proud of the fact that i'm a free thinker, and that I am able to draw conclusions for myself. However I would much rather there was an afterlife, than no afterlife. I'm not pleased by the fact that life is finite.
