in an attempt to get into shape for summer, i have been changing my diet (for about 6 months now. no pop, lots of water and fruit. and healthy food choices.) and doing something physical every day. my thighs, however, seem to be very stubborn. would doing squats help, and if so, how many per day?

(if its necessary, i am 5'3 and weigh 130.)

squats and lunges are good for your thighs. I would start out doing 3 sets of 8 and then either increase it or add weights. do a search on google for thigh exercises - they usually come up with a bunch of things you can do. good luck!

Squats will tone your quadriceps and gluteals (thigh and butt) However, it will not decrease the amount of fat on your thigh, it will only shape the muscle. If you are a woman, the estrogen in your body preferentially causes you to deposit fat in the thigh, the lower abdomen, and the upper arms. Toning the muscle reduces the jiggle, general diet reduces overall fat deposits, so yes, it will help. Make sure to keep feet about shoulder width apart, do not make your knees go forward but rather make your butt go backwards, and tighten the butt as you do the squat. How many you do depends on how fit you are. Start with three sets of ten, see how that works for you. You can increase it if it gets too easy.

You can not remove fat from one area. You are already doing the right things. Stay with it !!! You did not gain all that weight in 6 months did you? It takes a long time to get rid of it. I can tell you that you should be lifting weights along with a good cardio program. You should be doing squats because it will help develop some of the largest muscles in your body. Larger, stronger, growing muscles, when used burn more energy and therefore will accelerate your desired fat loss. Your body will first take fat where it an be taken from easiest. This is usually the last place the fat was put on. Fat builds on itself.
KEEP AT IT!! good luck!

A squat is what is known as a compound exercise, meaning that it will work out more than one joint, more than one set of muscles etc.

Compound exercises are the best type of exercises you can do, they burn a considerable amount of calories, and build up you're thighs a lot more. Since muscle needs an energy source, your thighs may use the fat around them as this source.

Other things you can do are cardio exercises, espcially rowing, running, and cycling, all of which work the leg muscles even more.

Stair stepping also helps. A machine or any stairs you have around.
