My son is supposed to wear the costume of a story book character to school on Friday (3/23). Do you have any ideas for something quick and easy? He is 4 1/2.

Steve from Blue's Clue - Blue sweatshirt with a strip of duck tape across the chest.

Any biblical character - bath robe, towel draped over head with string or headband holding in place.

Any animal from a favorite story by wearing the correct colors, making ears out of cardboard, and paint their nose with finger paint. IE: Black cat - black pants and shirt, pointy ears out of black cardboard attached to a headband of matching cardboard, and black paint on the nose.

Scarecrow from the Wizard of Oz - Over sized flannel shirt, faded blue jeans with patches, rope for belt and to tie at the cuffs of his jeans and sleeves, stuff the shirt and jeans with plastic grocery, or paper, a little bit of straw to hang out of jeans and shirt. Add a little bit of make-up.

Thomas the Engine & Friends - Get a small box big enough to fit around your childs waist. Paint box blue (for Thomas), or green (for Percy) etc. With colored construction paper add stripes and train number to sides, also add black train wheels. On front make a 3D face with construction paper to match your train of choice. Attach a belt from a robe to each side and harness over shoulders. Dress child up with a conductors hat, if one is available.

Charlie Brown - Black shorts, socks and shoes onhand. Use yellow tee and cut the zig-zag from an old black tee. Sew or glue it on and there you go!

Harry Potter - Old black robe from your halloween box and some plastic glasses with tape on the nose bridge.

You can also make your own make-up, instead of buying some, and it's quick and easy.
You will need:
2 tablespoons of soft shortening
4 tablespoons of cornstarch
Food coloring

Mix ingredients shortening and cornstarch. Separate the recipe into different cups, add food coloring.

Wash your face and any area that you will be applying makeup to and than dry thoroughly.

Apply a thin coat of cold cream to the entire face.

Using a cotton ball, gently pat cornstarch over cold cream. Keep your eyes closed.

Apply make-up with fingers tips.

Hope that helps. Good luck!

Pick someone from one of his favorite books, that way it will be more fun for him. My daughter's school did that, but it was for Dr. Seuss's birthday so they had to pick characters from his books. There were a lot of Cat in the Hat's and Thing 1's and Thing 2's running around. Cat in the Hat is pretty easy, make a big red paper bow tie using construction paper and the same for a hat, just make it a flat striped hat then attach a paper along the bottom that will go around your son's head. Color his nose black and paint some whiskers on his face.

an idea would be tigger from winnie the pooh that would be easy because he could wear all inside out orange clothes and u could put black stripes on them and maybe with a little face paint you could paint his face orange with black stripes (which i am sure he would have a fun time having that done to him) and then get a cloth scrunch it together in a line and put stripes on it and tape it to his back. i hope that helps you, best of luck finding a costume, have a great week!

Does it have to be a traditional story-book character (like Jack in the Beanstalk or other fairy tale type stuff), or can he be Bob the Builder (who does have a lot of story books)?

If you had a daughter I would suggest Little Red Riding Hood... very easy to sew up a red cape with a hood.

Boy... storybook character... hmmm... how about Stewart Little?
