1- you need to identify what you are looking for. by self-defence you mean the best way to protect yourself. This is not necessarily learning unarmed combat.
Most altercations that CAN'T be avoided involve weapons. Unarmed martial arts are at a HUGE disadvantage when fighting a weapon. Even the most experienced and best trained unarmed fighter is at a huge and deadly disadvantage against an untrained crackhead with a knife. unarmed defence against weapons is a myth- it is largely a desperation move that is "better than nothing" but not nearly as effective or reliable as a weapon. I would suggest you look into the carry laws of your state, or learn knife fighting or a similar art that includes the use of small concealable weapons (FMA-filipino martial arts is good for this).
unarmed martial arts is good as a supplement or back up, but it is for those situations when you can't readily draw, or are unable to have or don't have a weapon with you.
2- you need to find a teacher
3- train and make sure you learn realistically. Which includes training with resistance.

Hi there
Take classes is a good way to start. Buy books, videos etc.
Self defense is a bit of a strange one I'm afraid. its really all about self awareness and common sense. If you have to use force then you've made many mistakes already.

Be aware of your surroundings and know that most bad people are not looking for a fight, they are looking for victims.
Convince yourself that your worth fighting for and will hurt anyone that tries to hurt you and you won't have many problems.
