They're definitely compassionate, I think. It's the OWNERS, and there are proven facts pit bulls are less aggressive than Rough Collies, which wouldn't be believed because Lassie was one. Little Rascals dog was a pit bull... my pit bull is the sweetest thing, and all she does is love love love! She is so smart, too. We sometimes get stray cats near our front door, and I'll let her out and she chases them away by barking. I've actually seen her nudge them with her nose to get them to leave! I hate the ignorant people who assume pit bulls are mean, when in reality and fact, it's the owner's fault.

They're definitely compassionate, I think. It's the OWNERS, and there ARE proven facts pit bulls are less aggressive than Rough Collies by about 10 percent or so, which wouldn't be believed because Lassie was one. the Little Rascals dog was a pit bull... my pit bull is the sweetest thing, and all she does is love love love! NOTE: I'll try to get the facts up as a lot of people will probably try to see, and please no igorant people who have no facts, etc. This isn't a DEBATE, I'm just trying to give the pit bulls a helping hand as they aren't bred to be the bloody killers they're known for; it's the people who RAISE THEM.

It is definatly the owner's fault. I have a 7 month old male pit and he is THE SWEETEST dog I have ever seen. He gets along great with the other dog, also a pit, he loves my chinchilla, and he likes to give our parrot kisses. Neither one of our pits has ever been aggressive towards another animal or human, adult or child. As a breed, pits are very loving animals. But just like any breed, or species, there are a few who have been either trained or lived in a lifestyle that has caused them to become aggressive. German Shepherds are supposed to be pretty nice dogs right? Well, I was attacked by one, and I knew the dog and the owners for several years prior to the attack, and the dog was not provoked in any way. To top it off, they were responsible owners and treated their dog better than many people treat their kids. So a breed as a whole should not be condemned, outlawed, or allowed to have a bad reputation because of a few dogs that have had bad owners. As far as the collies, it does not matter if they are a herding breed or not. ANY dog can have the potential to attack someone, even a toy breed. Actually, several of the herding breeds are a little bit more prone to nip because of that natural instinct. I have raised Australian Cattle dogs for over 15 years and some ACDs, who are working dogs, might be a little bit more prone to nipping at the heels than other dogs in that breed or in another breed. It is not because they are mean and aggressive dogs, or because they were treated badly, but it is a natural instinct that is very strong because they are active in working and herding livestock. The only reason that pits have been trash-mouthed as badly as they have been is because of what some of them have been trained to do in the past, and also because of their physical features. Yes, pits do have much larger and stronger jaws than many other breeds, and yes, they are a "medium/large" breed, being that some can weigh as much as 85 lbs, but what about all of the other breeds out there?? What about German Shepherds, or Mastiffs? I love the Mastiff breed and cannot wait to get one, but they can weigh as much as 260 lbs!! And they have pretty large jaws too. ANYBODY that disses Pits either because they are ignorant about the breed, or have had a bad experience about the breed, really just needs to keep their mouth shut. An entire breed should not be made illegal to own in some counties, or carry the bad reputation just because a few people were too heartless to care about their dogs.

I so agree with the previous post that you should never leave kids alone with a dog. They are only animals and dont understand what the child is doing.A parent should know that and realize they are the one to blame but it's just easier to blame the dog. So they don't look bad.!!
Just like problem teenagers...bad pitbulls are the product of poor "parenting". Furthermore german shephards are more agressive that pit bulls that is why police dogs are shepherds not pitbulls. I believe that if you raise them right they'll turn out right.
Any dog will protect their owner from danger it's the loyalty that they have.
The only problem I have with my pit mix is the chewing. She's almost 2 and still chewing.

Thing is Pit bulls where bred to be fighters and a lot of people don't understand this when they get a pit, they get pit bulls because it's nice to have a "killer dog" around, it gives them sense of power, they don't understand pits need to be raised very carefully otherwise they will develop the negative side of their breed.

Not everybody should be allowed to keep a pit bull. Is every pit bull capable of being agressive?, you bet they are. But just becuase they have fighters' DNA doesn't mean they are cruel, that's what we humans created them to be good at after all. Ignorant owners raise pit bulls that will attack little animals or little kids, how is that the dog's fault?. Can Pit bulls learn to respect and refrain their desire to attack?, you bet ! but it takes an intelligent human to teach him.

I back you up 100% I have a pit bull who is also the sweetest dog. She is friendly, loving and well behaved. It is insane to me that people honestly believe that pit bulls are vicious killers. They are not. When people meet my dog they fall in love because she is so sweet. When I tell them that she is a pit bull, they are shocked. But really, they shouldn't be, every pit bull I have met is a sweet friendly dog. But the ones who are not are a product of their owner. Any dog breed can be raised to be aggressive, and any dog breed can be raised to be a sweet loving companion.

Owners are defintely to blame for the negative stereotype associate with Pittbull Terriers.

However, I would really like to see the research that states that "Pits are less aggressive than Rough Collies." There are not a whole lot of owners out there training their collies to be attack dogs, they are herding dogs and do not have the instinct to attack. Pittbull Terriers however WERE bred as fighting dogs.

Perfectly said! I love pit bulls. I had one for 10 years. Her name was Petra, she was a red nose, what a sweet dog she was. Petra got a fatal illness and her organs gave out on her. I really miss her. I have a picture or her that still can make me cry and she died 14 years ago. Below the picture, it says, I love you and I miss you so much. Some people just refuse to accept that it is the owners fault when the dog turns out mean.

It is very much appreciated about what you are trying to do. They need the good news spread around about them, not the bad crap that you view all over the news.
They are wonderful pets, and were bred to fight bulls and other dogs, not to attack people, in fact that was what was specifically bred out of them, they have passed all the temperament tests that are given to dogs and they are also VERY fond of children.
Just like any other dog, proper training and good love means everything to these animals.
My American Staffordshire Pittbull Terrier is affraid of cats and little dogs if they come after her. She's been attacked by a neighbors German Shephered and ran away with her tail between her legs. Then she plays with horses and kittens and children like she never knew what rough housing was.

They are wonderful dogs if you know what you are doing and know that love, love, love, crazy love is all they need to be great dogs.

As with all dogs, there are two things to consider...

First, is the owner responsible? If not, any dog could bite someone.

Secondly, what was the temperment of the parents and pedigree?

I was bit by a pitbull who was a family dog and had never shown any aggression when I was 8.5 months pregnant while trying to protect my GSD puppy so I will never own one, but I think for responsible owners a pitbull could be a great dog for someone.

It's true Pit Bulls are the animal that gets spotlighted a lot these days because of some pretty horrible incidents. People used to say the same things about Dobermans. The way I see it, most "incidents" are caused by people who have dogs and purposely make them mean. Dogs are beaten, undernourished, and poorly trained by cruel/stupid people. I've known people that fed gunpowder to their dogs to "make them fierce, and vicious" These are the animals that maul children, and kill livestock. Dogs caught doing those things are "put down", whereas it's the people who get off with fines.
Well behaved animals typically belong to good people who take the time to teach their dogs how to behave. Nice people have nice pets!

Pits can be wonderful pets! My girl is a sweet heart! And I would take any thing said by some one who allowed a dog and child to play unsupervised with a gain of salt. YOU NEVER leave ANY dog and child alone for any amount of time Dogs are not babysitters.. if you leave them alone together and something happens it is YOUR fault not the dogs.
