Why is it when you go shopping, theres hardly anybody in line at the checkout, but as soon as you're ready to checkout, you find yourself fighting to get to a shorter line?

I never look at the length of the line (not REALLY).. I look at the amount of items each person has and the rate at which the cashier is moving. Then I choose a line and just stick with it. It is soooo irritating when a new line opens and people practically knock one another over to get to it. People have really become impatient. I was standing in line paying for some items (literally about 3 or 4) and the person's register messed up and they had to re-ring the items. (Mind you, that when me and the person behind me entered the line there was no one else, so this woman had only been waiting for literally 1 or 2 minutes). When the cashier started to re-ring the items, this woman behind me blurts out "Oh for the love of GOD!" as if she had been waiting for centuries. I just looked at her and shook my head. The cashier and I exchanged glances as if to say "get over it lady!"

One other possibility... you may be starting your shopping at the same time that a lot of others are starting their shopping (for example, after work). So when you go in, virtually no one's in line, but when you're ready to check out, so are many of them!

Certain times are definitely worse than others, even though there's an ebb and flow at most all times.

Every time i go to the store i ALWAYS have to wait in line. I look and try to find the shortest line and i look for people who have the least items so i don't have to wait so long. The store that i go to its always packed unless you go at night :)
