You can use Norton Ghost or some other drive image software to take a "snapshot" of your registry and other important settings, files, drivers, etc.. Then if your hard drive crashes or if you need to clean out your drive because of viruses and other malware, you can use the drive image disc to help restore your system back to where it was before it crashed.

I think you don't need the XP CD, but if you do and don't have one, you can borrow (or maybe download) one and use your license/product code to install it legally.(Need right version - Home or Pro) Then you can restore your settings and drivers.

I've tried "cloning" drives in order to replace a smaller drive with a newer, larger drive. Using the utilities that come with the drive (Seagate WD or Maxtor, haven't tried others though they often have it available on their websites) I successfully copied the drive at times. Other times I would lose the Restore/Restore Points info and therefore the use of Restore/Restore Points. Then, when I got an even larger drive, I was able to "clone" the "cloned" drive and would find Restore/Restore Points had become functional again.

Oh, if you just want to back-up the original XP CD, you can use Nero or some other program to make copy or make a DATA disc. Just close the install program when it auto-starts.

Hope these methods help.
