You might haveto ask the US Depart of the Navy to get a real answer.
The ships could have been on the way to the Mideast during the 1973 Arab-Israeli war.
I remember this because my unit was put on alert and we couldn't leave the post.

The 1973 Arab-Israeli War was fought from October 6 to October 26, 1973, between Israel and a coalition of Arab states led by Egypt and Syria.

you have all of it incorrect. San Francisco loves the army. there continues to be countless military Bases in the SF Bay section. The military makes use of pier 34 and 35 to dock ships. for the time of fleet week thousands of gay adult males trip in SF coming from international for all those sailors in tight white. San Francisco is a small city with water on 3 aspects. each and every little thing is properly controlled. I remember the Iowa concern it had extra to do with the national Maritme Museum and area availability than a pair Peace Nicks. Come to think of of it, what number RedsStates have a Nautical Museum with WWII Submarines docked or Mine Sweepers docked. Oklahoma has a Nazi Sub on exhibit in Moskhogie sp As for the recuiters. fairly some the RedsStater Stasi dropped that by way of fact the recruters have been arested for offering acolohic beverages and hookers to college scholars. California has the utmost proportion of electorate in the protection tension of any State. Recruters do no longer could get youngsters laid to trick them into becoming to be a member of.

ok....man im not 100% sure but my guess would be (these are types of ships not specific names of ships) the destroyer, air craft carrier, battle ship, frigates, sloops, megawars, and i guess the occasional tug boat.
