Mia Diva 2 is correct. This is one of the better types of built in safety devices. Think about how many times that you are at a stop sign, a stop on red before making the turn or starting to pull out from a parking spot and you pick up a spot of light in your line of vision and suddenly realize that a vehicle (because of the DTRL) is about to past you that you missed on a quick glimpse. Many a time this has helped me during the daytime driving. I'm sure this will be of help with your future driving experiences.

Everyone keeps saying it can't be done but another person answered with this" The only way for the daytime running lights not to go on is for you to have the parking brake engaged BEFORE you turn on the engine. If you have the engine running already, they won't go off when you put the parking brake on, you will have to turn the engine off first, engage the parking brake and then turn it back on. "And I'm not sitting in my corolla with my car on lights off. So it WORKS

The only way for the daytime running lights not to go on is for you to have the parking brake engaged BEFORE you turn on the engine. If you have the engine running already, they won't go off when you put the parking brake on, you will have to turn the engine off first, engage the parking brake and then turn it back on. The only way that I've heard of bypassing this is to find the sensor that engages when you put the parking brake on that locks off the daytime running lights and wire it so that it is always sensing that the parking brake is engaged. I don't honestly know where that might be, but the web might be better able to help you find it.

Hope this helps.

I also own a 2004 toyota corolla. I don't think you can turn them off, it's an automatic thing. I never figured it out either, but it doesn't bother me.
