We went to Vietnam as advisors to assist and train the French and the South Vietnamese to fight the communist north as early as 1953. The big scare in the United States at the time was known as the "Domino Theory" The Domino Theory stated that communism was spreading eastward from the Soviet Union and would eventually envelope the Far East (North Korea had already fallen) so under the Eisenhower administration means were taken to stop the spread. The French eventually pulled out of Vietnam and this drew the US deeper and deeper into the conflict unfortunately.

We did not attack Vietnam. The elected government of South Vietnam asked the United States for advisors to train their army because the army of North Vietnam had already run attacks into the south. When the North escalated the fighting, many US personnel were killed in combat, so the US sent more troops in and "officially" entered the combat. It's only unfortunate that the US government was so afraid of China that we were not allowed to fight without one hand tied behind our backs.

To help the South Vietnamese people retain their freedom and not become a communist nation, to support them in their effort. Here's some evidence--from an interview conducted by John Baltimore Martin with JFK, it is in the John F. Kennedy Library;Kennedy:Begins,Kennedy speaking "
Just have profound effects as far as our position throughout the world, and our position in a rather vital part of the world. Also, it would affect what happened in India, of course, which in turn has an effect on the Middle East. Just, it would have, everybody felt, a very adverse effect. It would have an effect on Indonesia, hundred million population. All of these countries would be affected by the fall of Vietnam to the Communists, particularly as we had made such a fuss in the United States both under President Eisenhower and President Kennedy about the preservation of the integrity of Vietnam."

The domino theory. If Vietnam became communist, other countries in the region would "fall" to communism, just like a stack of dominos. Was this a likely theory? In a way. It had already seemingly happened in Eastern Europe with the Soviet bloc and satellite nations, and some communists preached world domination..

The Government of South Vietnam, The Republic of Vietnam, asked for our assistance. We sent them advisors and equipment. When our own advisors showed that units of the North Vietnamese Army were assisting the VietCong we sent in troops to fight them.

JFK sent in "military advisers" to help the South Vietnam fight the North. They asked for more, and JFK gave it to them. LBJ escalated it even more until Nixon finally ended it. (I bet you didn't expect that, did you?)

This may sound a little flip, but given the conduct of the war and the prevailing mood of the time?

" If you build it, they will come. "

I don't know. JFK sent "advisers" there initially. Check the archives.
