I evaluate individuals with swallowing problems as part of my job. The medical term for a swallowing problem is "dysphagia." Persons with dysphagia typically have one of two complaints: 1) frequent coughing or choking on food or liquid, and 2) feeling that food is sticking is sticking somewhere and won't go down completely. There are other symptoms but these are by far the most common particularly if you are otherwise healthy. See http://www.asha.org/public/speech/swallowing/ for a description of swallowing problems. What you do about a swallowing problem depends on the cause. Typically, people either modify the way they eat (this may be as simple as chewing your food better or taking smaller bites/sips at a time), or they alter the consistency of their diet (for example, staying away from hard and dry solid food). Some individuals may also receive therapy to improve their swallowing. One final point, although you may feel swallowing symptoms in your throat, it could be a result of something going on in the esophagus.

The trick is to not think about what you are swallowing and just swallow quickly

I did a few years ago and was constantly choking on water. I felt a soft lump at the base of my thoart and I could move it around with my fingers. I went to the Doctor and he said it was a tumor. I had it removed and glad I did. He sent it off and it was precancerous. If you are having problems, go see you Doctor just to be on the safe side.

Two things.

You either have an infection in your throat, or you have tonsil problems.

Gargle with a mild solution of salt...it's terrible...but that does help.

Avoid course type foods, such as peanuts, dried toast, and coconuts.

Good Luck!
