Is problem alternator or voltage regulator. Obviously battery is good because everything was working off batt only

Since the voltage regulator is housed internal to the alternator, I would put my money on the alternator being the cause of your issue.

If you were driving and things started to die on you its the alternator.
Becuase once the engine is started practically you only use power from the alternator as it recharges the battery.
You loose the alternator it realies on the battery for only so long.

definetly the alternator i had a crownvic and a sedan deville that did the same thing

get a battery charger, then you can charge it yourself and see if it stays charged, if not, you may need a alternator, could be just a loose fan belt

you said it yourself. the alt is not charging. with the vehicle running, pull the positive cable off. if the engine starts to die, then you know its the alt. if it is charging, it will not die or sputter out.

Test battery first.
Check belts and test alternator.
My money is on the battery.
