My healthy, fun loving kitten has recently used my bath mat as her bathroom. Her litter is in the bathroom and 2 weeks ago she peed on my bath mat. After throwing the bath mat out and buying a new one the next day, my kitten pooped on the new bath mat. I'm not sure what is going on with her. She has never had an accident prior to this. She is now spending the week at my parents and after 6 days, she pooped on their bathmat. Does anyone have any advice? This is very random for me and other than her eratic use of bath mats, she is a completely happy and crazy kitty.

It is very common for cats to toilet on bathmats - they like the feel of them. There are few rules about cats and cat litter: it must be clean or they will toilet elsewhere. Try to change it as soon as it is dirty. No one likes a toilet that is unflushed. Also while one cat will like one kind of litter another will hate it. You can tell by how long she lingers in the tray. If she gets in and digs for ages she loves it. If she is in and out in a flash, she hates it. If you have changed her litter recently this could be cause. Either way try a few types of litter. AND believe it or not, cats have a preference for colour - they are meant to be colour blind so I dont know how this works, but I had a cat that would never use a yellow tray - any other colour was fine. So try getting another colour tray with a the old litter type or new litter. It is always useful if you are having problems to have more than one litter tray - keep one where she is currently urinating inappropriately eg bathroom and then move it slowly over several weeks to its new home eg laundry. Hang up the bathmat when not in use. Finally, it is always worthwhile visiting a veterinarian and making sure she doesnt have an infection or crystals causing 'stranguria' causing her to be so distracted when she pees she couldnt really care where she is. Hope this helps

It is likely that this is not an "accident" as we understand them. Cats instinctually bury/cover thier waste, so they don't often do things like that. She may be doing that on purpose in an effort to get your attention.

Your kitten may be unhappy with her litter box. This is how my cat reacts when he is unhappy with his. Make sure she can easliy get in and out of it. If she is small you might need to put a step or something like that. Also, make sure there is an adequate amount of litter in it. There should be 3-4 good inches in there. Often people don't fill them full enough. They need to be able to dig and bury.

Make sure that you are cleaning out the box, at least once per day, maybe twice. Some cats don't mind it, but mine is very very particular about his box being clean. If it is not clean enough, or he doesn't have enough litter to bury he will push pther things up against the box as proxy.

You might also want to monitor the consistancy, etc, and watch her eatting, drinking habits. If they are sick, that is often a way that they attmept to get your attention. When my roommate's cat had a urinary tract infection she would pee on the bed. The vet said that is pretty common.

Good luck.
