Play Dough Recipe 1
4 cups flour
1 cup salt
4 cups water
4 tablespoons oil
1/2 cup cream of tartar
Mix all ingredients in a sauce pan. Cook and stir over low/medium heat until play dough is completely formed and no longer sticky. Allow to cool slightly before storing in an air tight container or zip lock bag.

You can divide it up and add food coloring for colors. It's a lot of cream of tartar but I think that helps keep it pliable.

I have two kids and I would let them play with play dough at 15 months. I do not know if your daughter will get what you are trying to teach her art project or otherwise but I think she will really enjoy the texture and "squishy-ness" factor of the dough as well it is easy to manipulate. The only thin that bothered me about play dough is the mess factor- it gets everywhere including under fingernails, hair and all over the house. I suggest doing it outside or with a plastic mat underneath her. Honestly, you have to learn to ignore other people's comments, it comes with the territory of being a mom- everyone else thinks they are an expert. Like I tell my two kids, I dont care what your friend's mother lets them do, I am your mother and I will decide what is best for you. LOL, I just said that yesterday to them!

The following website has eight different recipes for homemade play-dough.

We always liked the cornstarch type because it had enough salt in it to make sure the kids didn't want to eat it. Also, you don't have to have cream of tartar, which is expensive stuff if you have it on hand only for play-dough. You can add food coloring, just a few drops, if you want colors, or leave it plain to air-dry and paint, if you like. At the website below, it's called cornstarch clay.

CHILDREN'S PLAY DOUGH

1/2 c. flour
1/4 c. salt
1/2 c. water with food coloring added
1 tsp. cream of tartar
1/2 tbsp. oil
Oil flavoring for scented play dough (optional)

Mix all together in medium saucepan. Cook, stirring constantly over medium heat until ball forms. Don't let it get too dry. This doesn't take long to cook. You may add cinnamon or peppermint oils to add a scent to the play dough. Be sure to use non-toxic, edible flavorings in case the children happen to eat some of it.
