We purchased our first pug puppy on Sept 29th 2006, he is now 7 months old. A co-worker is giving away a 3 month old male pug. SO CUTE! Anyway, what is your experience with having 2 male dogs in the house, so close in age? Good? Bad? Our dog right now is so spoiled rotten, and sleeps with my hubby and i every night, etc, etc, etc. Do you think he'd take to a new dog? Which would be better if so, a male or a (spayed) female? Just curious..

She is giving him away because her daughter had bought him about 2 months ago, and suddenly decided she doesn't like pugs, so the lady doesn't want him because she already has 2 dogs, and I LOVE pugs, so that's why she asked me

With some breeds of dogs having two that are the same sex can be disasterous or deadly to one of the dogs.
Males can and do fight. Some are fine but having both of these guys neutered may help.
It just depends on the dogs. Pug are not usually a big fighter and most do not pose a problem with other dogs but I always recommed if you are going to have two dogs have both fixed and get one male and one female as that tends to cut down on fights and problems with marking territory and such.

I think you could try taking the pug on if you're ready to look after another one. Pugs are very sociable and it could be good for them to be together.
The only problem might come from the fact that you've spoiled your first pug rotten! You may, at some point, have to draw some boundaries between you and your husband on one hand, and your dog(s) on the other. The problems of having two male dogs often come from one of them needing to be the 'boss' of the other. What's important in your house is that you & your hubby are the bosses of everything. If the dogs know their place, they should get on OK.
Things may be easier if your dogs are both neutered, incidentally. I doubt there would be any real problem if they were.
Also, I know I just couldn't resist another little pug if I were you! ;)

I heard that the more different the dogs, the better they get along. But i'm sure having two male pugs will work out fine.
I have a 4 year old male chuhuahua, and an 8 year old female Keeshound, and thier unseparable.
So I say having two dogs isn't a big deal. A lot of people have two dogs and thier isn't a problem.
My friend has 3 dogs and they get along really well. (A boxer, chihuahua, and dachshund)
So don't worry about it. Just get the second pug. Two dogs are always a lot of fun.

In general, the ideal combination is a neutered male/spayed female. But two male dogs often will coexist very well in the same household, especially if your existing dog is already well socialized with other dogs. Your chances for the best result will come if both dogs are neutered. My sister has two male Cavalier King Charles Spaniels and they do fine together. Some very dominant breeds (such as pit bulls who were bred originally to fight other dogs) do have problems with male-male aggression, but to my knowledge this is not a particular problem with pugs.
Introduce the dogs before you commit and see how they do together.

A spoiled dog will be jealous to have an "intruder." He will get less attention and this will create more tension then just having 2 males. Also, you really need to be prepared for a puppy. Many hours of training are required for house breaking, obedience and socializing. Two puppies will make train each harder and more then double the time needed.

Can you afford to feed 2 dogs? What about vet care for 2 dogs? Do you have time to spend with the dog you have now and another dog? Have you had the pup you bought spayed/neutered yet? Is it updated on shots? Why is the co-worker giving away the pup?

The important thing to do is to see to it that at least one of them are fixed. It will cut down on one of them being territorial, and if one of them isn't fixed but the other is, he probably won't feel as threatened over things.
Before getting another dog, take the one you already have for a visit to see if they get along. If they do, go for it. :)
Males can get along with other males fine. Naturally, they probably get along with females better, but they can still be friends with a male. It really depends on the personalities involved, which is why you should set up a play date first to see if they're compatible.

Since they're both young, it shouldn't be a problem. Just make sure you neuter them both as soon as the vet will allow it to prevent territorial behavior and fighting. Two dogs will play together and form a 'pack', which is good for their overall behavior and well being, and also helps get them to exercise more. Just make sure you pay attention to both dogs equally and discourage any competitive behavior like toy-snatching or fighting over food.

i had two males before and since they were young there was constant fighting and bickering. They loved each other but the fighting would go on for hours and they would break things in my house. You can put two males together as they get older the fighting would decrease

take him in. your pug may be jelous for a while but they will get used to each other. you'd be doing a good thing for him. i don't think there is a differance in introducing the same or opposite sex at this point.
