I told a guy that I liked him as I've had a vibe from him that he liked me too. Didn't hear anything so texted him to ask if I had scared him, he said he wasn't scared just cautious? Don't really know how to take this. Whats the difference if he's cautious of me then surely that means he's in some way scared of me??

You were true to your feelings but he is not.
Just by his answer he is not quite into you as you are.
This was Yes and No situation, however he is going with maybe, which means he is not sure of his feelings towards you. Back off and let him decide on his own. And don't rush him.

maybe he came out from a bad relation ship that made him scared from all women but u have to ask him in person to know more.

he`s not scared of you but just wants to take things slowly in case he gets hurt,sounds like he may have been in the past,so just give him time.

Maybe he's not ready for a relationship yet because he is afraid of getting hurt from it. I think he still likes you though.
