What is it like? What are some things to see and do? Are Turkish people friendly? Is it safe? Did you enjoy your time there? Why or why not? How expensive is in Turkey? What is life like in Turkey? What is backpacking like in Turkey? Are there hostels? Are they good or bad? Is it safe to backpack in Turkey? (As you can see, I have a lot of questions).

Also, if you live in Turkey, don't be afraid to answer--this question isn't just for the tourists. All answers are appreciated.

Travelling to Turkey is easy, as the bus network is really good. Some places are best accessed through shared taxis, called Dolmus. Istanbul can be worth visiting for a whole week, there are interesting cities like Izmir, Ankara, Konya, Edirne. The mountains in the East are certainly fascinating, however the Kurdish speaking areas should be avoided because there are sometimes clashes between independantists and the Turkish security forces. Istanbul is a big city, you should be careful but not scared, just like in any other big city in Europe. Turkish people are friendly. Try not to look too much like a tourist when going to markets and shopping malls. Istanbul is quite expensive, there are cheap hotels in small towns, you get what you pay for, no air condition in summer but I least they are cheap.

I went backpacking last summer through Iran and Turkey and it was safe enough for me. Turkey is one of the major holiday spots in Europe and it shows in the number of tourists it recieves. Backpacking there costs about 30 EUR per day. I enjoyed my trip, altough I was rushed for time and was constantly taking night buses. I ended up being totally sleep deprived.

In the east of Turkey, there are no hostels. But with a bit of luck, you end up paying around 12 EUR for a very very nice hotel room. The same amount will get you only a hostel bed in Western Turkey.
