You could use several things..
a wand or a tarot card with the suit of wands on it,
any of the following stones: fire opal, amethyst, fire garnet, pyrite/firestone
any of the following herbs: garlic, hibiscus, mustard, nettles, onion, hot peppers, red poppy, rose
or an animal representation: Salamander, lion, snake, dragon, horse, serpent

hope this helps!

You can use anything that sparks your imagination as a substitute. What matters is how it feels to you. I am a PectiWitan (sort of Hedge Witch) and do not use an altar. People of my denomination are not into worshiping the Goddesses and Gods but become one with them in Nature. I do cast circles tho and I can't imagine being without a candle! I have been practicing quite successfully for over 40 years

You could use a stone or a flower that reminds you of fire. Basically, whatever reminds you of fire is sufficient as the point is the work that it does with your mind and your energy.

A real fire, as from a candle will probably be a bit more effective, as it is more real to you. Still, part of working magick is visualization, and if you can resonate with your altar it will be effective.

Depends on what time of the year it is and what you are going for.
If you're in the islands, a piece of lava would be great.

Mostly, it needs to say fire to YOU. I've seen pieces of Yule logs, burning incense, rocks/crystal/gemstones associated with fire. In the fall, a bright red leaf from a tree would do, as long as it works for you.

I have a rock that gets put in the fire in sweat lodges, so when I am out of doors during high fire season, I use that. It's a rock, and it's been in the fire and when I see it, I visualize fire. To someone else, it would be a rock and probably difficult to associate it with fire.

I know a girl that has a dried bottle of chili powder on her alter. She doesn't like lighting fires inside. Anything that represents fire to you would be a good start.

Good question. I can't think anything to represent fire but fire. I hope others will have some kind of idea. I'll think about it some and maybe email you later.
