Our Whippet is totally PET ONLY. They are wonderful pets, easy to kennel train, mostly dormant and great with kids. You all can race, beat, train, transport your whippets all you want, we only like them as pets. ALso, i wanted to breed because i love the temperment of MY WHIPPET. I wanted to stud him and get to keep one puppy, and let the female family have the remainders. After hearing from you all, i think i will just buy another. That is the problem I am having, everyone wants to see champions in the bloodline before breeding. Where did the DOG or PET get lost in all this?

If you have to run and race your dogs and win ribbons to feel good about yourself, than more power to you! I guess thats why whenever i watch the dog shows on TV i see the most "out of shape" people i have ever seen. I have heard of living thru your kids, but thru your dogs????

Sorry but this is not a dog pimping service and you will find that 99% of the people on here will not like your post and are against back yard breeding
Yes I am against it as well, breeding your dog to get a puppy is not right!! the other puppys in the litter what about them. If your dog was breed worthy then the breeder would have kept him. Is he at least 2 years of age, have you had him in the show ring, has he won any champion titles, dose he have a health cert fro the vet, all these things need to be taken into concideration before breeding.
Please get the dog fixed and if you would like another one find a good breeder and buy one.

The very top dogs are available at stud to anyone with a decent bit ch, why would they want to use your pet instead? As Ragapple said, most people that get a Whippet want them for a specific reason, like to show or run, and are not going to be interested in a pet.
Another thing to think about, is that using him for breeding is likely to bring out more unwanted male behaviors like marking and aggression. Stud dogs can become rather hard to handle and he will remain a much nicer pet if he is never used.
You would be much better off to buy a puppy, if you would like help finding one, email me. And no, I am not trying to sell my own, they are all spoken for.

LOL!!! Well I have a litter right now. Make a killing??? Not so much. Break even, *maybe*, but not if you consider the gazillion dollars spent to get their championships. Of course, anyone can pump out a litter of pets and do no health testing. But there are breeders, and then there are *breeders*.
You said - ". You all can race, beat, train, transport your whippets all you want, we only like them as pets."
My running show dogs are ALSO my pampered pets, *HARDLY* beaten!!!
" ALso, i wanted to breed because i love the temperment of MY WHIPPET."
They are *ALL* sweet, to bad not all Whippet owners are...
"That is the problem I am having, everyone wants to see champions in the bloodline before breeding. "
Exactly what is wrong for pet Whippets to LOOK like they should??? They don't have to be low quality to be great pets!!!
"If you have to run and race your dogs and win ribbons to feel good about yourself"
I take my dogs running because they LOVE it!!! *YOURS* would probably love it too!!! Ribbons have nothing to do with it, it is about doing something with my dogs other than having them lay around day after day.
Like I said, when the very best of the breed is available through stud service, WHY would someone want to water down the genetic pool by using a pet?
So tell me, since you claim to love Whippets so much, have you had him cleared by a cardiologist? Eyes CERFed? Baer tested? We don't need sick Whippets!!!

I am sorry about the judgemental group .. I say go for it wippets are awesome dogs... I would try a whippet search I am sure there are lots of fans of the dog ( i am one) also try you local paper just make sure you get them vet check before breeding... this group makes me sick they call everyone a backyard breeder.. they dont even know you.. I would much rather buy from a litter that the mom was a family pet then one that has won in shows...and is constanly stressed.. you might want to try placing them in the mid west there is a huge shortage here.... and they are not hard to place... unless you are in a flooded market becausse the " reputable breeders" dont know when to stop....shows are very stressfull to dogs.. whippets make wonderful pets..if you have a hard time placing them I will take them all .we made a killing with the last litter and they were gone in a week I live in utah but would be willing to pay shipping and then some..good luck with the pups

Don't breed because you want one puppy. What will happen to the others in the litter? Has your dog been to the vet to be checked for any genetic or congenial health defects? Is he a proven CH in the show ring? Do you know the standard for this breed? Did you speak with the breeder that sold this dog to you? Was he sold as a pet maybe because he dose not have what he would need to excel in the show ring thus not good for breeding?

I know someone in your neck of the woods trying to find homes for a litter outta two WRCH titled dogs.- she's been trying for 6 months..
Whippets are hard to place, Most byers are looking for the next great show dog, courser, racer so unless your boy is a race meet winner, a show ring winner, coursing best in field or some other such major accomplisment on the national level I'm afraid your gonna have a problem finding a taker.

Check with a local breed club in your area.
If your dog is well qualified to be used for stud you will find someone who would be happy to give you a pup for the service. But you are going to have to be able to prove the worthiness of your stud dog. Hope he is well titled and has all his current health certifications.

Perhaps the way in which most of you responded to this person's inquiry would explain his dissatisfaction with this group? Most of you were rancorous, condescending, and snobbish with this poster losing any influence you might have had to graciously explain and perhaps educate him and any bystander who happened to stumble upon this thread instead of driving a wedge and perpetuating the very problem you were so incensed about in the first place. Just something to think about.

With hundreds of champion, health-tested, proven whippet studs available, why should anyone use and unknown, untested, unproven pet?

Is there a dog club near where you live? Maybe there are breed clubs listed on the Internet.
