Are there any substances in food that can cause allergic reactions to dogs? If so, what are the most common? And to what dogs? When my mom was little, she used to own a parrot who loved Haitian cuisine. Especially when the food was disgusting or when they ran out of bird food, my mom would give it to the parrot and to her dogs and horses, who wouldn't eat the nuts, crackers etc. anyway. The parrot died a couple of months later and the cause was unknown since there was no such thing as a veterinarian in the old days. The dogs and the farm animals survived.

There are foods which some dogs are allergic to, but chocolate is an allergy across the board and can kill a dog if he eats too much of it. Also, any food with caffeine can be dangerous for dogs.

I know everyone will tell you that you should never give dogs people food, but my vet has confirmed that some things once and awhile are okay, like beans, white or brown rice, and meats. My dogs LOVE refried beans, so now and then I'll mix a little bit in with their food - they freak for it, and it hasn't effected their health at all.

As far as people food making dogs die quicker, would you rather have a dog for 15years just living a life. Or would you rather have a dog for 12 years giving it the joy it truly recieves from treats from you time to time. That does not mean that dogs should be given a lot of people food but treats sometimes are ok.

Hi Kenny.
When you feed dogs animal food if its something they are allergic to they'll leave it.
Unless of course your dog's a pig! Our older dog died a couple of months ago after eating human and dog food combined for 16 years so it can't be too bad.

check with a breeder and your vet on possible food that you specific breed of dog are allergic to. then just avoid those foods and feed the others. but definately avoid caffein and chocolate.
