I suggest taking a starter block, which is a wooden cube or wooden strip made with wood and wax. Just light it with a match and it is easy to start a fire.
It is a little crazy that a careless cigarette can burn down a forest, but people trying to start a fire on purpose can't get one to burn!
I've had trouble myself before. Use a starter block and consider brining your own dry starter logs and newspaper. Once the fire gets going, you can burn dry logs from the woods.

LOL.....pretty funny. Seriously though, there are better ways to start a camp fire. Try placing some thin steel wool in the center of your kindling. Steel wool actually burns, and it produces a lot of heat. It will also work if it gets wet, and usually only takes one or two matches *smile*
