I have a 3 year old chihuahua miniature dashund mix and she is about 5 lbs. She is such a picky eater. I give her hard dog food and she will maybe eat like 2 peices at a time. If i give her soft canned food she will take a couple bites and be done. And she will not eat dog treats at all! I was just wondering if this is normal for a small dog like her or what should I do about it? I have tried everything... The yummiest dog foods even she wont eat it.

If you just bought her she may be adjusting, also you do not need to worry about her starving she will eat. Make sure there is nothing wrong internally or externally, maybe a tooth ache. But it is not uncommon for a small dog to eat small amounts at a time and eat extremely slow. It may be best to just leave the food down and let her be, unless she stops eating completely. You should monitor how much was put down to see if she ate the next day.

Hi,

It's good that your dog is a picky eater that way he won't over stuff himself. Dog can self regulate. they will definitely eat when they are hungry. don't worry.
i don't know if it's normal to eat so little. but it's good. i had the same experience with my dog. he was incredibly picky as a puppy but i soon learn that he the brand of dog food makes a difference. i tried several different brand of dog food. we ended up only giving Science diet. eventhough i put food out 24/7 but he only eat when he's really hungry. sometime he only eat once a day or twice in 3 days. however the frequency, he still ended up 96lbs. this made life really easy for me.. so don't worry. it's a good thing you dog don't just randomly stuff himself with anything. he will end up healthier this way.

Is this something new? She's so itty-bitty she doesn't have a lot of reserves, I'd take her to the vet to make sure she doesn't have a medical problem - check her mouth, look for any sore spots or broken teeth that would make it difficult for her to eat.
