Because it requires faith. Science, and our modern society founded on science encourages us to be rational - and God is irrational.

I don't refuse to believe in God. I just find myself unable to believe in a God. You can't just make yourself believe things.

News Flash: people don't refuse to believe in God; they actually don't believe in his existence. Just because someone is not a Christian does not mean that he or she is being rebellious and choosing not to believe in God. People believe what they want to believe because of what they know and how they were brought up.

A much better question is: why do some people believe in god?

There's no evidence of any kind that there is any such thing as "god." There have been thousands of "gods" throughout history, and you don't believe in any of them (Zeus, Odin, Thor, Osiris, Ra, etc.)...so why believe in your particular one when there is no more evidence "he" exists than there is for any of those other ones?

That people can believe so passionately in a superstitious myth for which there is no evidence is beyond my ability to understand...

Peace.

Why do you believe in God? Because your parents told you to? I bet they told you to believe in Santa Claus once upon a time too. No one ever told me to believe in God, so why would I suddenly start believing in something that there is no proof of?

Because modern science and technology has gave some of us a reason not to. We have opened our minds and see the bigger picture. We see beyond the bible and the church and see what they really are and stand for. Religion is a chance to explain the unexplainable, a way to control society. For everyone that can look past fear that church puts in us and see it for what it is, we can see the truth. The only thing religion does is to control use fear and get money.

Refuse? That assumes that there must be one to believe in. Atheists don't believe in religion, or the need for any manmade rituals or mythical beliefs, we don't refuse to believe in your god or other gods, we choose not to based on our own intellectual observations.
