I believe that hitting is necessary whenever a child does something that is really bad and needs to be controlled at that instant. On the other hand, I had a mother that lost control and was abusive (strangling, throwing/destroying things etc). So as a parent I have personal issues with striking my children just because I don't want them to feel all the horrible things and anger that I felt. None of us are perfect and we are capable of losing control from time to time. But I simply don't accept losing control with my kids and I don't want anyone else to either. I do think that a child should be popped on the hand whenever they try to do something that may hurt themselves or others. I think they should be popped in the mouth if they use ugly words. And I also think they should be smacked on the butt if they tell a lie. I don't think that makes me a child abuser. We are protecting them not hurting them. I agree that you should spare the rod and spoil the child. I practice that theory with my children every moment. But I also believe that a firm hand is needed from time to time. Parents lose control whenever they fail to teach their children between right and wrong. So being moderately firm when its necessary, yet always giving love and understanding abundantly to your children is best for them. Or at least I believe it is.

Spanking has been kind of a hot button issue in the media lately because of a bill that someone tried to pass in California banning spanking of children 3 and under and I think it has got people debating about this form of discipline.

Spanking only teaches the child that whoever is more stronger wins. What do you do, spank(hit) a kid to teach him not to hit his brother, so, your contradicting yourself. Modeling principles is better than spanking. If i hit (spank) my husband i go to jail, what difference is it if i hit a child? Spanking is wrong. The more respect i give my child, the more he gives me!
Children that are not spanked are not any more likely to be spoiled then kids that are.

This board is open to a wide variety of questions. If the spanking questions bother you, you have many others to choose from.

I spank my kids too. There is nothing wrong with it. People who dont spank their kids have spoiled rotten kids. When I spank my kids they mind and it doesnt hurt them or send them mixed messages. I have well-behaved kids with values and virtues. I feel sorry for kids who dont get the discipline they so desperately need. Modern day thinking drives parents to raise tomorrows criminals.
