Muslim women are respected and cherished. In America you are EXPECTED to use your sex appeal to get jobs and basically get your way. In Muslim society they are respected as they are. To cover for the sake of Allah when everyone is against you...is just so amazing.
Also, you should check out Sofia Baig's poetry on myspace. Listen to her piece called "daughter of the sand"

Islam doesn't say that women aren't allowed to do certain things...
However it encourages everyone to listen to their parents.
And if a woman is married, then both the husband and wife should compromise in order to have a successful marriage, respect, etc.
For instance if the husband doesn't want his wife to travel alone, then the wife has the right to ask for the same in return.
There is nothing that says that wives are supposed to do everything their husbands ask.
In fact the Prophet himself has said, "women, do not break the hearts of your men. If you break their heart you will be subject to hell's fire. And men, the same goes for you too."
However some Islamic countries, like Saudi Arabia, are very harsh with their laws.
These are NOT Islamic laws! They are just boundaries set by fanatic men! And have roots in their cultures rather than Islam.
EDIT:
Dear Nikki,
The five pillars of Islam are :
1)Monotheism,
2)Prophecy,
3)Imamat,
4)Resurrection day,
5)Zakat (charity, either by being kind or money-wise)
The ones you have mentioned belong to the 10 important pillars of Islam, but NOT main.

depends where you live, on your family, traditions, etc..here in egypt for example, living in the city is different than living in a village or living in the north or far south. and all depends on how strict your family and community are. you'll find muslim women going out alone, attending parties, doing sports, going to work, and you'll find those who aren't even allowed an education. who can't look out the window. all got to do with sex. male and female.

It's probably because of her cultural background. There's no restriction on a Muslim woman to go out alone or to go to work or study and whatnot.

u have to understand one thing: there is a difference on what islam instructs a woman to do and what her culture dictates of her. sometimes the two go hand in hand and other times culture wins over islam.
i am a muslim woman who lives in the middle east.
i wear the hijab. i wear a long black coat and scarf. this is not what islam tells me to do. i could wear loose fitting clothes with nothing showing except my hands and face and i would still be following the rules on hijab. why do i wear a black coat and scarf (with no sign of what i'm wearing underneath)? because the culture i live in says that this is the preferred style of hijab.
saudi women would cover their faces. why? because over there it's what people consider the preferred style of hijab.
are you getting the gist of it???
islam has certain rules for me; such as not taking off my hijab infront of an unrelated man, not being alone with an unrelated man,not wearing perfume in front of unrelated men, etc. these are some of the rules specific to me of course i follow the other rules prescribed to both muslim men and women such as praying, fasting and giving charity.
nowhere in islam does it say that i can't go out alone. the girl you probably spoke to had it imposed upon her because of her culture or maybe her parents just didn't trust her.
i think i have a pretty normal life. i don't feel like i'm missing out on anything except that being saudi adds to my stress levels!!!!!!
samantha:
actually the five pillars of islam is to profess the declaration of faith, prayer, zakat, fasting in ramadan and the hajj.
you got mixed up with the articles of faith which are: the oneness of God, His angels, His prophets, His books, the judgement day and fate-good and evil.

im not a Muslim but i do know that Muslims have to try and follow the 5 pillars. which are to fast during the holy month, give to charity, the trip to mecca, that you have to pray 5 times a day facing a certain way, and that Muhammad is the messiah. something like that. i have no idea on why they are not allowed to go out alone though.

Sometimes religion and culture are mixed up, the fact is that Women have equal rights in islam and they are allowed to go out even alone !
And for women are rights over men similar to those of men over women. (2:226)
'A'isha reported that Saudah bint Zam'ah went out one night. 'Umar saw her and recognized her and said, "By God, O Saudah, why do you not hide yourself from us?" She went back to the Prophet (peace be upon him) and told him about it while he was having supper in her room, and he said, "It is permitted by Allah for you to go out for your needs."
See this was even allowed in that time.....now if some peoples do not allow their wives to go out, its their personal and traditional attitude not islamic!
I m a muslim woman and i m allowed to go out whenever whereever i want to, and i have the permission to spend my life whatever way i want to. their is not much difference between christain woman and us......our dresses are more covered than christains....because is something that is ordered by our religion, rest we follow our religion like offering payer, being caring about our familes just like other women, we do go for jobs, have all the liberty to get education... its just like other women !
