Four and a half months is still pretty young to start training. Maybe he just doesn't want to leave home, he doesn't know he's coming back. Try carrying him out of the yard and then put him down once you are a block or so away.

Go to the dollar store and get a 20 foot nylon leash... when you walk him next use that and just keep walking away from him... he will get scared and follow once you get far enough away. Dont coddle him and tell him "its ok" or anything just keep walking and when you get to the end of the leash tell him goodbye!! and keep walking away.. he will get the point trust me my dog did the same thing, now its me who drags behind! Just Whatever you do dont give in to his act... just be calm, assertive and determined.. he will feel that from you and will instinctively follow because of it. When he whines or sits and wont walk dont even acknowledge that with any attention just keep walking like you dont even care.. The carsick thing well you will just have to wait until hes older and see if it gets better usually it does.. just like children are more prone to motion sickness so are pups.
PS you said you have other dogs right? well next time you can also just tie the pup to one of their leashes and let them drag him around... that works too..lol sounds mean but hey my new pup tried to do the same thing but he was connected to my other dog(the one who used to drag behind) and he just got pulled all over until he decided it was better to walk then get dragged through the mud.. ha ha Also if you have the pup on a short leash and your other dogs on long leashes that helps too, when a dog sees another running ahead they cant help themselves but to try and catch up.

Persistence and Patience, and lots of it.
Remember to reward him for every little bit of progress he makes. Praise is so important, APBT's love to please. Working with him on a regular schedule is the best, it takes work but it is worth everything you put in, you cant be hit and miss with dog training it is like giving a child mixed messages, you need consistency.
Take short trips in the car, and talk to him this will reassure him that this is OK. I have a female that used to just shake in the car, she now LOVES car rides. Don't got too stressed out, he is still a baby ant this will take some time. Don't doubt your dog training skills, it doesn't take much to be a trainer, Consistency, consistency and reward. Good Luck!

Put a british slip lead on him at the highest part of the neck like in a dog show. If he shuts down pull up once and walk. After a few corrections he will walk

My dog did the same thing when he was a puppy, He would buck and I would have to drag him.
The best thing to do is let him wear the lease like you have been doing. If you can, find a place that is fenced in (so he don't get away, and let him walk around with you without holding the lease. Then eventually try to walk with the lease.
He has to learn to associated the lease with good things. Like when he comes to you with the lease on, he gets a treat. Try nudging him from behind to walk, or try walking him around the house. He'll get used to it, stick with it.

put the leash on him and let him walk around with that around the back yard/ house/ etc. let him wear it and get used to it. he needs to learn that the leash wont do anything and he needs to know that if he wants to get some where he needs to move
