No it doesn't, a lie detector can basically only detect if you get nervous or scare when asked about something, but that's not reliable; you can be scared or nervous for a hundred reasons one of them because you know that many innocent people go to jail for crimes they didn't do; you can also be framed by the Lie Detector technician and the police. Besides some criminals can lie and be as calm as an innocent baby and pass the lie detector. The police only use it as a scare tactic but they know it's a useless machine, you can refuse to be tested on it and they can't use that agaisnt you. Don't trust what you see on TV shows.

The machine is monitoring blood pressure, breathing and other body functions. The premises is that the body goes through various changes when lying to someone. The machine picks up this flunctuation.
The reason lie detector tests are not used in reference stated in your question, various legal reasons: the detector is not reliable, some people know how to "trick" the machine, and others that I'm sure are out there but I don't know them.
Someone with a little more legalese than me might be able to share some other reasons.

No. AS mentioned earlier, the polygraph test detects slight changes in heart rhythms and skin temperatures. If a person is nervous, it can have the same affect as a lie. Any answer which is preceded by hesitation is considered a lie by the polygraph even if the individual is telling the truth.
The evidence, including testimony, has to place the accused party in a position in which the evidence must prove such- being their guilt- beyond a reasonable doubt. Polygraph tests administered under duress are the same as forcing a confession.

A lie detector doesn't necessarily dtect a lie, it measures your heart rate and some other items, and how your body responds to certain questions and baded on how your body reacts determines if it is a lie.
As an example, you could be asked your name and if you were nervous the machine would pick that up as lie, even if you were being honest.
A lie detector isn't really all that reliable, nor aret they admissible in court.

Lie detectors measure changes in respiration, perspiration, heart beat, and other bodily responses to questions and answers.
We have the 5th Amendment to the US Constitution, the right to avoid self-incrimination.
Lie detectors are not fool-proof. Some people are so good at lying, that they can beat the machine.

They are very innacurate and can be fooled. I once worked in a store and may people were taking merchandise as it showed up during an inventory. The owner had every employee tested and I was the only one who passed even though, regretably, I was one of the people that was taking merchandise. Then too, I am a diagnosed pathalogical liar.
