A good doctor would have advised you that almost 50% of patients with IBS get worse on high fibre diets. Interestingly this group feel better on low fibre diets, but for a number of reasons there are not considered a good idea,On paper Colpermin, high dose peppermint oil is licenced to help. In my view it seldom does and just gives the patient indigestion.
Antispasmodics like mebeverine often help the cramp, but not the annoying fluctuating bowel habit.
The only drug I have found consistently helpful is amitriptylline in low dose 10-25mgs at night is usually sufficient. Once upon a time this drug was used as an antidepressant, now it's main use is as an atypical pain killer, especially good in neuralgia. In IBS it works as a smooth muscle relaxant.

nerves can play alot in this problem. I had U.C. an dhad to really learn how to live with it until I had surgery, you won't go that far but they have meds that can ease the problems . So Seek a Physician.I can tell you this much though, When mine would act up alot, I could take Hydrocodone and it actually slows the bowel down. You got to be careful though and not get hooked. It can get you through some rough spots if you have something you have to get done and it's really acting up. You have to be very careful though,Seek that Physician though and ask, doesn't hurt!

Keep a food diary. Keep track of the times you have problems and also write down everything you eat and drink for a month. You may have food intolerances. I was also diagnosed with IBS and the doctor told me to keep a food diary. It helped tremendously. I discovered that poultry, eggs, honey, beets, and cherries all make me sick. I have to read the labels on lunch meats and hot dogs, because it is possible to eat chicken without knowing it. When I avoid these foods, I am fine.

My mother has it and takes Citrucel before every meal. The pill is much easier to take than the liquid because of the "flavor". You also need to avoid high fiber foods as they irritate your digestive symptoms..no cabbage, broccoli, beans, etc...even yogurt and cheese can be upsetting. She doesn't really like to take medication and the Citricel works wonders. You need to start by making a food chart for your flare up foods as well researching how to have a better diet. Ginger for examples aids in digestion. You're gonna have to make a lifestyle change because it's not going away.

I would suggest keeping a food diary of what and when you eat.
I thought I had IBS until I discovered I had bouts whenever I had milk, butter, ice cream, or cheese. So now I know I am lactose intolerant.
It is worth doing to see if there are foods you should avoid. Just look for a pattern.

Try and work out what foods are causing you most problems.
Stress is a main factor so try and Calm down.
Herbs - peppermint and camomile teas help.
Main food culprits are wheat, corn, dairy products, coffee, tea and citrus fruits.
Foods to avoid grapefruit, tomatoes, red and green peppers (as they contain a chemical called capsaicin which makes the colon go into spasms.
Eat soluble fibre like pears, apples, cranberries, avocados, blackberries. Potatoes, okra, cabbage, carrots and pulses.
there is also a theory that psylluim helps (from health food shops) and probiotics

Yea ofcourse.... well Buscopan relieves the pain and diarrhea .... but more important is it's cure, rather than just treatment ....Just focus on the name.... Irritable bowel syndrome... it means nothing is wrong with the bowel.... but it's getting noxious stimuli....... and these stimuli are in the brain... that is stress, anxiety, depression and all that.... Relaxation techniques help not only in better final results, but also help in relieving acute attacks.... Simple relaxation techniques, meditation and relaxing music all help dramatically....

Do you have something against the pill? I started it and WHAM! no more period problems. no cramps, barely any bloating, they are shorter and lighter, and i feel NORMAL during my periods now. Hot cammomile tea is my other thing. midol helps, heat helps, Vitamins help, but only short term. if you want relief month to month, then the pill is a very good idea
