1mg extended release tablets but when I went to pick them up, the pharmacy said it would be $165 for 60 pills for the generic (1 month supply). That is way too much. I have insurance & it isn't covered nor is any anti-anxiety med. I need to ask my doctor to change the medication to something cheaper. Does anyone know of a cheaper medication that works??

Xanax XR is much more expensive than regular xanax. Many times a Dr will prescribe the xanax xr because there is less chance of abuse. A prescription for xanax usually cost 15-20$ for a months(3 daily) Talk to your Dr. If you have no history of substance abuse, Dr. may change prescription for you. The price I quoted you is for generic xanax. If you don't ask for generic, you will pay 4-5 times more for your prescription.

Are you saying that you take xanax XR- 3mgs. 4 x a day? Plus you are taking regular Xanax also???! That is an extremely high dosage. Xanax can be very addictive, but it can help you with the panic. I would call the doctor and ask again just to make sure. Docs can make mistakes, too.

I agree with Riptide. Xanax XR (the XR stands for extended release) is not available in generic form. Xanax (the non-extended-release version) IS available in generic form as alprazolam and is much cheaper ... 60 1mg pills would be approximately $20-25 depending on the pharmacy and your region of the country.

But, of course, as they are not extended-release, you would need to take them more often.

Klonopin (generic clonazepam) is one of the longest-acting benzodiazepines ... and it is especially effective at treating generalized anxiety disorder. It does not have as much of a "quick onset", like Xanax, so patients don't typically feel as much relief as they do an hour after they take Xanax. But when taken regularly, Klonopin will build up in the bloodstream and often be just as effective, without as strong a risk of addiction or abuse.

From personal experience and experience with others, I highly recommend clonazepam unless you are diagnosed with Panic Disorder, which often requires a quicker-acting drug.

I hope things get better for you --

Nathan

Regular, generic Xanax is fairly inexpensive. Xanax XR is still under patent and expensive. Change to regular Xanax, and the price will decrease.

Several companies have approval for a generic version of Xanax XR. Ask your pharmacist to fill your prescription with the generic version - that should save you money.

The generic for Klonopin maybe cheaper and any of the benzos that are not extended releases maybe cheaper. I take the generic for Ativan , 1 pill, three times a day. It is cheap, but I have to take it frequently.
