Please sweetie go to the salon and let a pro do this. The dye you get in a store is not professional quality it is bad for your hair

Stay away from Clairol products, they are the most damaging to your hair. Since it would be your first time, don't try something too drastic, you may not like it. Stay away from permanents. Since you have never dyed your hair before the time does matter. If you leave it in for too long, it will not make it any darker, but it would be more damaging. The color that you put on will look darker than what it really is, it is the chemicals, so if you pick a medium brown, it will look almost black in the bottle, don't freak out, that isn't the color your hair will be. Also, since it is your first time, try a temporary color that washes out in a week or two, that will show you how your hair will react to a more permanent color.
I ahve dyed my hair many times, with salon products and store bought products, if you do it right, then the results are the same.

Not certain if your avatar represents your hair color now or not...if a red head however, depending on the shade of red...(strawberry blonde etc) rule of thumb...go no more than 2 shades up or down from your color (up-lighter, down-darker)

If you're afraid of getting it odd looking...either have someone else put the dye on for you so you don't miss any spots or go only one shade up or down so that the difference isn't that huge from your natural.

Also, if your hair is long...you may need two boxes as some of the dye's won't provide enough to cover more than almost shoulder length. Buy a quality dye, cheaper dye's can really damage the hair (dry it out, turn it brassy or green ugh).

L'oreal, Feria or even the brand new Clairol w/highlights work very well. Follow instructions carefully, timing do that 'strand' test to determine exactly how long you should leave color on in order to get a good shade. If you are going lighter than your original hair color use one of they dyes specifically for doing this. If you are going from a dark brown for instance and want to go blonde you'll have to strip the color first...this can really damage the hair if done incorrectly.

I'd really suggest for a first coloring job to get it done by someone who knows how to do this properly or at a salon.

PS only leave it in for as long as indicated on the package instructions and only if your strand test gets it to the color you want within that time period....timing does matter...leaving it on too long doesn't only change the color more but also can damage the hair...especially if peroxide is an ingredient.

Good luck

It depends on what color your hair is now and what color your coloring it. If your hair is dark and you try to dye it too light, it won't work. But dying it a shade that's similar to your natural color or reddish you can't mess it up. Be sure to completley saturate your hair with the dye or you will end up with spots. You should leave it on for as long as the directions say

I like the dye that last for 28 washing. It looks natural and when it is fading out it is not noticeable at all.I use the Clairol Natural Instincts brand.I have med.brown hair naturally, but I dye it so it will have a red/alburn tint.It is simple to do just follow instructions on the box.And after you dye it and you don't like the color you can stripe it out by using Prell shampoo several times.(Be sure not to get permanent dye if trying for the first time.)

Hey,
If you are going to do it yourself and its your first time I would definitely stick with a semi-permanent dye (lasts up to 28 shampoos). That way, if you completely hate it, it will rinse out in about a month or so. Also, I wouldnt do anything too drastic, like going from black to blonde hair or vice versa. Just do something simple and subtle. I found that Clairol natural instincts works the best for that.

what color is it? make sure it brings out your face and your eyes. then have it where it's a good style or something that is easy to manage with blowdryer.etc.. leave it in as long as the box says though, b/c I didn't and it turned my hair yellow instead of blonde the first time. reapply it every 4-6 weeks hope I helped! :)
