I've heard this but I don't see how...
Would it be because of a feeling of helplessness?

Depression can be caused by several factors. Depression can also play tricks on your mind and make you think all sorts of unhappy, unfair and unrealistic notions. Being angry at yourself, or at everyone else can be a symptom as it is very frustrating being in a depressed state.

If you go to a doc, they'll just throw pills at you, but if they don't bring it up, ask about what type of counseling/therapy they would recommend. Therapy is NOT just for crazy people. Sometimes in life, we get hung up on something and a professional can help get us over the hurdle.

about 5 years ago, I started to fall into a really depressive episode. At first I thought it was only because I had a bad break from a relationship but the feelings wouldn't go away even after I got a new girlfriend. It was wrecking my life until a point where it was seriously affecting my work and personal life.

She was very worried but at the same time couldn't understand why I was still sad and thought that I still couldn't let go of my previous relationship. Being the wonderful person that she is, she put aside her feelings and suggested I go for psychiatric evaluation. Many months later and even more anti-depressants, I was not coming close to being better at all.

After doing some research online, I found out the real cause as you described it really makes a lot of sense and purchased this program. The results were simply astonishing. I read this book over three times and put all words in action. Using this method, I've kept my depression at bay ever since. Up to date I'm still living happily with my girlfriend.

I agree with the phrase. Depression is often brought on by feelings of anxiety/helplessness which among a lot of people can turn into anger and rage. When logic intervenes and you realize that the anxiety/helplessness is a product of your own actions/temperament, the anger is directed inward and typically leads to depression and other self-destructive behavior.

A person turns the anger inward, they're mad at themselves. They can't get rid of the anger or express it fully (something like helplessness here) because its against themself when they aren't the cause of it, so the trapped emotion causes depression.

I have a lot of internel anger, directed mostly towards myself. Sometimes just feelings of failure and inadequecy. This is definitly a form of depression. I go home sometimes hating myself because of a bad grade or something another person said to me, but it's not entirely my fault (of course i could have studied more, but everybody fails sometimes). It just depends on the range of depression.

I've heard of depression defined as this, but I think it is only one possible reason for depression--not all encompassing.

And I think what it means is that when you have lots of anger about something (could even be about yourself), and it is not expressed healthily, it becomes quite debilitating and corrosive, and that is an unhappy state of affairs, that feels quite bad, and so..can be exhibited as depression
