There are many birds that can mimic speech and even associate words with meanings appropriately. There is,however, no bird that will repeat everything you say. The African Gray has a great talking ability. There are many that are good also but don't carry the reputation for speech as this bird. Of course there will be exceptions to consider. Not all birds that can speak, will. Your best bet, if you are determined to have a talking bird, is to adopt an older bird that talks already. Also, a fearful bird will not be likely to speak. Speaking, like singing, is the sign of a healthy, happy, contented bird. Birds can learn to talk from other birds, but sometimes if a bird has another bird companion, he will be less likely to talk, since he is probably already getting the attention he craves. Here are some of the names of birds that tend to talk a lot....

African Greys: These are perhaps the most celebrated of talking parrots, known for their extensive vocabularies and cognitive skills.

Quaker Parrots: These lively medium sized parrots can be impressive little talkers, and tend to learn environmental sounds as well as words and short phrases.

Indian Ringneck Parakeets: Ringnecks are a wonderful choice for people who want a talking bird. Their beautiful colors and medium size make them attractive pets, aside from their crystal clear speaking abilities.

Budgies: Although they may take a little more effort on the training end, many budgies become surprisingly proficient talkers.

Cockatiels: These little charmers from down under are known for their whistling and excellent imitations of environmental sounds -- but with love and attention are able to build quite impressive vocabularies.

Amazons: Several species of Amazon have reputations for outstanding talking ability, and make wonderful pets for those that commit to them.

Care: Food: You can give him lettuce, apples, parsley, and carrots as healthy treats. Do not give them peach pits, apple seeds, or avocado. To be safe, do not give them any fruit seeds. You can give him millet spray, but it is fattening for them, so don't give him too much or you'll soon have an obese bird on your hands. Toys: There are certain types of toys (destructible, preening, food, sound) Make sure to supply them with a variety of types of toys. For example, don't give him a bunch of bells and nothing else. Perches: You can use wood perches for your bird in addition to the standard dowel perches. Manzanita, Bamboo, and eucalyptus are a few bird-safe trees. All perches should be washed and have no pesticides, oils, or any dangerous chemicals. Training to talk: First, choose a phrase you want him to say. Parakeets usually learn stuff with the long "i" sound, like hi and sky. I got my parakeet to say "hi Skye" by saying it to him every time i walked towards him. He picked it up pretty quick. Second, say it with emotion. Your bird usually likes anything you say with emotion and that's why so many birds learn to swear! Third, don't give up. It takes time for your bird to speak his first word. If you hear him making some gibberish, he could be trying to say your word. Just keep repeating it over and over. Names: Sprite Sugar, Sprite Diet, Sprite Caffeine-Free, Sprite Might, Sprite Light or Sprite Lime.

You're probably thinking of a myna bird.

The african grey is the best talker of all the parrot species though.
