I have a tattoo that I designed that I really want done on my lower back. It would be fairly large, detailed, and would have a lot of color so I know it will be expensive but just how painful will it be? It is a cross with wings and a halo and horns and a tail and fire and a rose wrapped around it, there is a margarita glass with an olive in it and a gun with a bullet and blood splattering. I know it sounds odd but it looks really neat.

I have high pain tolerance. I'm in the ARMY. I'm use to pain but not self inflicted pain.... that bothers the life right out of me.

Regardless of how large, or colorful, this particular tattoo is going to be painful. Inking your lower back always is. Of course, pain tolerance varies from person to person. I don't seem to be bothered by needles at all, and my skin sort of numbs after about thirty minutes or so when I got my tattoos, but, others fight the urge to squirm and cry. Sure, those of us with high pain tolerance recognize the pain, but we are able to distract ourselves or block it out, it's very convenient. If you tattoo is large, your best bet might be to get the ink in stages. Sit through an outline, then the filling, coloring and shading at other sit downs. Make sure you're comfortable with the artist, because if you're nervous, your senses will be heightened and actually increase the pain you're feeling. It's true. So, as long as you remain relaxed and have a focal point, perhaps something to read and are in a comfortable surrounding, maybe with a friend, too, you should be fine. Keep in mind, the area you are getting inked is very sensitive, more so on women because of soft fat tissue and what not, so it's perfectly normal if a tear or two slips out, or if you need a break. Getting breaks from pain are sometimes a good idea and sometimes bad. If you can't handle the pain and your skin hasn't numbed partially yet, then you take a break, the area will be more painful like a big bruise! GOOD LUCK!

It wont hurt to bad I have a butterfly with a tribal on the sides of it and it didn't hurt too bad just like the outline will hurt and you wont even feel the coloring. Well it also depends on how you can tolerate pain like me Ima big cry baby so it kinda hurt me a lot but everyone is different but really it ain't all that bad if I could do it you can.

Well as you'll probably hear alot, everyones tolerance for pain is different..the tat on my back didn't hurt THAT bad..but it was uncomfortable..the outline is what will hurt, after the outline you've pretty much numbed up..i honestly couldn't even feel it about 5minutes after he started..alot of people say the same..if you have a fairly high tolerance for pain, you should be fine..remember, if it starts to be too much, don't be afraid to ask for a break..good luck

The one on the top of my foot hurt really bad but once the artist gets about 15min into the pain slows off a bit. It was an odd kind of pain to me kind of a tickle and hurting at the same time. It hurt when i walk for a few days I even had to keep my shoe off at Checkers my previous job. LOL it kept rubbing my shoe and would irriate me. Keep what kind of work you do in mind it might be good to go for it over the weekend. Best of luck

ok it depends on your tolerance of pain. some people think it hurts and others dont think it does, Im not big on pain but i got a tattoo on my lower back that took an hour and 45 mins and it didnt bother me at all where as my friends got one in the same place and thought it hurt bad. after sometime your skin goes numb where the tattoo is being done at.

Here's an easy answer.

Yes, it will hurt, and for the first few minutes you are going to cringe.

However, once you get past that point, it will go numb on it's own. After that, all you might feel is a prick or two here and there.

BTW.....be glad you are getting your first one on your lower back. That is probably one of the least painful spots to choose, since the nerve endings are a bit more than surface deep. Good luck!!

uhhh id say the outline and the shading hurt the worst.... depending on how many needles are used. i just got one on my foot and it hurt like a *****. and i have a seriously high pain threshold. this was my 5th tat. buuuut.... its not gonna deter me from gettin the rest. ( i have about 6 more to go ) the pain sucks when ur gettin it... but its all worth it... just be careful.... youll get addicted! i got 4 in one year!
