This is a commercial that airs in Toronto, Canada- the little dog is named "Maggie"- white, small, looks like some sort of terrier?

i'm thinking of getting one- i live in a condo in the city, just me, no kids. i'm away from home during normal business hours, so the dog would be left alone aprox. 8-9 hours. any recommendations/warnings?

Yes that is a Westie, and they are not good or recommended to be with younger children but with older children that are well behaved and more knowledgeable on how to be with dogs. They (westies) have a way with showing some defensive reactions to people and things. If you need to physically correct a terrier, and you go beyond what THEY believe is a fair correction, terriers (as a group) are more likely than other breeds to growl or snap. It may be because they were bred to become more fierce when their prey fought back, i.e. terriers are apt to "return pain" if they "receive pain."
I repeat: I do NOT recommend terriers for small children! Many terriers will not tolerate any nonsense from little life forms whom they consider to be below themselves in importance. Many terriers are quick to react to teasing, and even to the normal clumsiness that comes with small children (accidental squeezing of their ears or pulling of whiskers or stepping on their paw). Many terriers are possessive of their food and toys and will defend these from all comers, including children.

West Highland Terrier's have always been the 'Caesar Dog'. They are lovely dogs, I had one for many years and he was so good with people and children.

If it's the one I'm picturing, I think it's a West Highland Terrier, or a "westie"
