My beagle basset mix that I got from the pound over a year ago (he is about three years old) bit me last night on the hand. At the time he had been playing with the other two dogs in my house and they had all been going after a hoof. My dog had the hoof and was crouched over it and growling at another dog who was approaching for the hoof. I did not approve of his reaction so I went over to pick him up and remove him from the situation. As I touched him he turned and bit me on the hand.

When I first got the dog an identical situation occurred. I have had no problems with him between the two incidents, he is not aggressive towards food, often my other dog will push him out of the way to eat his food and he wonders back to me looking confused.

Is this a situation I should be worried about or is this instinct taking over? The dog is incredible docile most times and even if you spray it with water he cowers back to you until you pet him and let him know its all right.

well. in most cases you should get rid of the dog if he bites you but he sounds like a very well behaved nice og so you should discipline him when he does bite, but try to avoid the situation by not giving him the things he bites you over. i cant cive my dog raw hide becuase he has bitten me before for the same reason

If he starts to get this way with his food so that you cannot go near him any time there is anything in his mouth, you have a situation on your hands and need to get him in to some kind of obedience training. Right now he is showing his "mine" side. He was just playing with the other dogs over this and getting quite physical, you got in the middle of it. It is a lot like you and a buddy goofing around wrestling and someone trying to step in and they get dropped. He didn't mean to, but always reinforce that biting will not be accepted. Good luck.

Did he actually break the skin?

Most likely he reacted thinking that you were one of the dogs taking his hoof. I'd certainly have reprimanded him so he knows it's NOT acceptable to treat me in that manner (so he knows to be more careful next time), but "bites" that don't break the skin are one way that dogs communicate with each other.

BTW, if the hoof is in his possession, it is fair for him to warn the other dogs off. In the doggy world, possession is TEN/tenths of the law.

Claim the item before touching it. The dog will bite if you touch him when he is in an intense state.

He has the object

1. Stand up tall and make eye contact

2. Hold the stare until he drops the object and walks away or is sitting or lying down looking away from it

when it happens, you need to not freak out, like dont yell, or jump away, forget that you were bit and take control of the dog and let him know that is NOT acceptable. he was probably worked up and just got ahead of himself.

no way! your dog has just been playing with other dogs and defending his food, and you try and intervene and take it from him, goodness he is a dog you know, and cannot think like a human!! give him a break, with rescue dogs you have to be totally focused at all times and try and think for once like a dog!

He may have thought your touch was one of the other dogs.
